FILE-HANDLE.
Specification of Letters iatent.
Patented nun- 22, 1921.
Application filed May 20, 1920. Serial No. 382,943.
To ail whom it vmt l concern.
Be it known that we, (1) Anonri-r Karma and (2) JOHN Snnnnrun, (1) a citizen oil the Dominion of Canada and (2) a citizen of Ukraine, residing at Winnipeg, in the Province of Manitoba and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and usetul improvements in File-Handles. of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of the present invention resides in the provision of a handle or support for carrying-a removable file blade so that files having different gage teeth may be mounted. upon the handle and rigidly secured thereto when in operation.
A further object of the invention is to provide a removable file for a file supporting handle in which the cutting surface of the file is provided with a plurality of apertures to facilitate the disposal of filings when the file is in use.
With the above and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the novel term, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described. in connec tion with the accompanying drawing, where in like reference characters indicate similar parts throughout the several views.
In the drawing,
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a file constructed in accordance with the pres ent invention, 1
Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same,
Fig. 8 is a longitudinal sectional view showing the hinged clamping arms for the file blades,
Fig. 4: is a cross sectional view taken 011 line Il -IV of Fig. 1 showing the connection between the outer end of the file blade and the supporting frame,
Fig. 5 is a cross sectional viewtaken on line V--V of Fig. 1 showing the file blade engaging the shank of the handle, and
Fig. 6 is a cross sectional view taken on line VI-VI of Fig. 1.
Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawing, there is illustrated a file supporting handle comprising a handle portion 7 carrying a fiat shank 8 with opposite ribs 9 while the outer end thereof is provided with a head 10 carrying opposite dove-tail-shaped lugs 11 upon the op posite faces thereof for purposes presently to appear.
A novel type of file blade best illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3 is employed and includes thereof.
a blade portion 12 with portions of the surl'ace thereof provided with a series of openings 13 through which filings may pass during the operation of the file. The file blades 12 are each provided with an opening 14: adajacent its outer end and into which the lug 11 is received.
Retaining means for the inner ends ol the file blades 12 is associated with the handle portion 7 and comprises a rod 15 that slidably projects into thecut-away portion 16 of the handle 7, while side strips 17 are secured to opposite faces of the handle 7, outwardly of the central slot 16 by the bolts 18. An arm 19 is hinged to each side of the rod 15 at its inner end as at 20 while the inner faces of the outer arms 19 are provided with dovetail-shaped lugs 21 that are adapted to be received in openings 22 formed in the inner ends of the file blades 12. The inner end of the rod 15 is provided with a threaded pin 23 to re ceive the thumb nut 24L while the washer 25 separates the nut 24: from the inner end of the guard stripsl'? and handle 7.
- In positioning the file blades 12 upon the handle 7, the thumb nut 24 is released from engagement with the handle and the file blades positioned to cause the lugs 11 to enter the openings 14 inthe outer ends The hinged arms 19 are then swung upon their pivots 20 to cause the lug projections 21 to be received in the file openings 22 in. the inner ends thereof, and
by tightening the thumb screw 2 1 the rod 15 carrying said arms 19 will be moved in.- wardly relative to the handle 7 to cause the dove-tail-shaped lugs 11 and 21 to be prevented from movement relative to the file blades 12, thereby rigidly mounting the blades 12 upon the handle 7. The type of file blade employed 'may be changed and during operation of the device the file is supported upon the side ribs 9 of the handle shank 8.
While there is 1 herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor ehanges may be made in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed.
What is claimed as new is:
1. A file support comprising a handle, a shank carried by the handle, a rod movable relative to said handle, file blades connected at their outer ends to the handle shank, means connecting the inner ends of the file blades to said rod and means for holding said rod rigid relative to said handle to prevent movement of the file blades relative to the shank.
2. A. file support comprising a handle, a shank carried by the handle, a rod movable relative to saidhandle, file blades connected at their outer ends to the handle shank, means connecting the inner ends of the file blades to said rod, means for holding said rod rigid relative to said handle to prevent movement of thefile blades relative to the shank, and ribs carried by the opposite sides of said shank for engaging the file blades intermediate their ends to rigidly support the same. i
3. A file holder of the type described comprising a handle, a shank carried thereby, file blades connected at their outer ends to prising a handle, a shank carried thereby,
file blades connected at their outer ends to the outer end of the shank, a rod slidably mounted relative to said handle, arms hinged to said rod and adapted to engage the inner ends oi the file blades, a threaded pin carried by said rod and a thumb nut upon said threaded pin adapted to engage the handle to hold the file blades rigidly positioned on the handle.
In testimony whereof We afiix our signatures.
ADOLPl-I KAPLAN. JOHN SEREDIUK.
