PATENT OFFICE.
HJ'ALMAR JOHAN RANDERZ, 0F yBACKEBO NACKA, SWEDEN, ASSIGNOR T0 AKTIE BOLAGET ATLAS DIESEL, OF STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN, A CORPORATION OF' SWEDEN.
INTERNAIPCOM'BUSTION ENGINE.
Application led February 6, 19,23. Serial No. 617,340.
To all whom z't may concern.:
Be it known that I, I-IJALMAR JOHAN RANDERZ, a vsubject of the King of Sweden, and resident of Backebo, Nacka, in the Kingdom of Sweden, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Internal- Combustion Engines,'of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates tO an arrangement in internal, combustion engines, by means of `which the air in the combustion'chamber of the li'vorking cylinderat the end Of the com-l pression stroke of the piston is caused to whirl and' thereby 4is intimately mingled with the injected fuel. For gaining the said Object the provision of a groove or cavity provided in the inner end of the piston and extending round the same 4and cooperating with Va torus=provided in the cyl-V inder at its bottom, is combined' with a cylinder bottom which is calotteshaped in such manner, that the air, which lat the endofl the compression stroke is forced from the chamber, enclosed by the bottom wall of the said groove and the side of the'torus, and into the combustion chamber of the engine, will move first toward the fuel inlet, centrally located in the rvlinder bottom, and' then downwards in the saine direction as the.
injected, atomized fuel, tl'ie air and the fuel finally whirling round in the combustion chamber. i
The accompanying drawing shows as an example and in a vertical section a. two stroke cycle engine, to which the invention is applied. The drawing shows in dotted lines the piston'in its upper position.
2 is a recess with concave bottom surface and provided in the top end of the piston 1. The said recess extends round the piston. 4 is a torus or shoulder provided at closed end Or head of the working cylinder 3 and extending round the inner side Of the cylinder, which torus co-Operates with the said groove for the purpose stated below. During the Operation of the engine the air compressed in the crank chamber 5 passes through the channel 6 and opening 7 into the cylinder, in known manner, and ejects the combustion gases through the Outlet 8. As the piston approaches its upper position, shown by dotted lines, the air which is con.:
tained in the chamber enclosed by the bOt-` tom of the recess 2 and the side. ofthe 'torus 4, is forced in an oblique direction tour Of the same being curved shaped and extending from the torus 4 to the fuel in' let or sprayer 9,y the radius of the calotte of the cylinder decreasing from the torus.
The said air forced into the combustion chamber passes along the calotte shaped side of the cylinder lhead toward the sprayer 9 and then downwards together with the introduced atomized fuel forming forcible whirls resulting in' anl intimate mixture 'of fuel and air. Owing' t'O the fact that thee-air moves downwards from the sprayer 9, thus in the same direction as'the fuel, the airhas no tendency Of counteracting the entrance and spraying of the `fuel.
I claim: v
In an internal combustion engine the combination with a cylinder having inside a shoulder-shaped part and a piston-reciprocally mounted in said cylinder and having a recess inthe working face thereof, cO-operative with the same shoulder-shaped part, as the piston approaches the limit Of its compression stroke, said piston having the portion thereof lying inwardly Of the recess cup-shaped, of a cylinder head, having the portion thereof, lying inwardly of the.
j shaped surface in relation to the center line e shoulder-shaped part, calotte-shaped with 'v curve-shaped cr'oss section, which rightfrOm the said shoulder approaches the longitudinal centre line of the cylinder, and .a
