IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING AND ROCKING CRl BS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 151,312, dated May 26, 1874; application filed February 28, 1874. i

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, OLIVER NAILER, of North Lawrence, in the county of Douglas and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rocking Oot and Foldin g Cribs, of which the following is a specification:

The invention is an improvement on the class of cribs whose side pieces are pivoted together, and to rockers which fold up alongside when the crib is not in use.

It consists chiefly in pivoting the uprights together at the top, and arranging end pieces to hold them apart when the crib is in use, as hereinafter fully described.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is an end elevation.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

A represents a pair of uprights at each end of the cradle. These uprights are connected together by the rod B, which forms the pintle of the hinge by which the upright of each pair are connected, as seen at O G. D D are the' sides of the crib. E E are the ends. F F are stringers, which are attached to the uprights. The sides D D are hinged to cleats on the stringers, as seen at G, and the canvas bottom is nailed or fastened to the stringers. H H represent the rockers. These rockers are made each with a longitudinal slot, I, which is parallel with the bottom of the rockers. J J are buttons on the outer ends of rivets, which rivets are attached to the lower ends of the uprights. The rivets of the movable uprights of each pair pass through the slots I I. The rivets of the other uprights pass through holes in the rockers.

When the crib is in use the sides are attached, by means of books K K, to staples in the uprights. The ends E E are pivoted at one end to the two stationary uprights. Their other ends are notched, and rest on the stringer, as seen in Fig. 2, so as to hold the movable uprights apart, and hold the crib in a rigid position. In this position the o1 ib rocks like an ordinary cradle.

For folding the crib the sides D D are unhooked and turned down. The ends are turned up on their pivots, and secured in an upright position by means of the pins L L in the uprights, and the holes min the ends. One of the uprights of each pair is slipped in the slot in the rocker till it is in contact, or nearly in contact, with its mate.

It will be noticed that the slot drops down at the end, as seen at N, which allows the rockers to turn up to a position parallel with the uprights.

Folded in this manner the crib takes up but little room, and may be transported, or stored away when not in use, with the greatest facility.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, with the pair of uprights A, hinged together at the top, of the side racks D, side bars or stringers F F, notched end pieces E E, and rockers H, all arranged, as shown and described, to adapt the crib to be folded or extended, as specified.
