N. M. MAHAFFY TOOTHBRUSH HOLDER FilQd N V- 16. 1923 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Mf'fcamaw attozneu PATENT OFFICE.
NINA. MAE MAHAIFFY, OF ARMADA, MICHIGAN.
TOOTHBRUSH HOLDER.
App11cation filed November 16, 1923. Serial No. 675,128.
, To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, NINA MAE-MAHAFFY, citizen of the United States, residing at Armada, in the county of Macomb and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toothbrush Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tooth brush holders and has for its primary objects the provisionof a device of this character wherein provision is made for holding a plurality of tooth brushes in convenient position for use, while at the same time maintaining the several brushes separate and protecting the same from dust and other foreign matter for sanitary purposes. 4
Another object of the invention is to pro- "yide a tooth brush holder wherein provision 1s made for permitting a particular person to readily identify the, particular brush supported by the holder which is intended for his particular use, and wherein means is provided for permitting ready removal or replacement of the brushes'when desired.
A further object of the invention is to rovide a tooth brush holder characterize as specified above, and wherein consideration is given to cheapness of manufacture, simpliclty and durability of construction.
Other object will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, and the same consists in the novel form, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying rawings, andclaimed:
lln the drawings, wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a tooth brush holder;constructed in accordance with; the present invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view thereof taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Fi re 3 is a view part1 in to Ian and partlg in horizontal sectio il, tak n substam tially upon the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Fi re 4.- is a fragmentary vertical sectiona view, taken substantially upon the line 4-4 of Figure 2, and
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the hinged cover of the device.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, the present invention embodies a substantially rectangular horizontal elongated casing including a body 5 composed of top, bottom and end walls, and having a transparent closure plate 6, suitably mounted in the front thereof, the rear of the casing body being closed by a depending hinged cover 7, the upper edge of which is moved with a longitudinal bead as at 8 for pivotalconnection with the rear edge of the top wall ofth body as shown in Figures 2 and 5.
The end walls of the body 5 have rigid rearwardly projecting arms or plates 9that are connected at their inner or rear ends by means of a bracket plate 10 that extends parallel'with and is spaced in relation to the back of the casing, whereby sufiicient room is provided between the bracket plate 10 and the rear of the casing to permit rearward swinging of the cover 7 to open position as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2. The bracket plate 10 is provided with suitable openings as indicated at 11 for the reception of a suitable driven fastening by means of which the device may be effectively secured to a wall at a most desirable location.
The interior of the casing is divided into a plurality of compartments 12 by means of a plurality of parallel transverse partitions 13, and the bottom wall of the casing at each chamber is provided with a transverse slot extending forwardly from the rear of the casing as indicated at 14. The forward or inner portions of the slots 14 are narrower than the backs of the tooth brushes while sufficiently wide to admit the shanks of the tooth brush inwardly of the brush back. in orderthat the brushes will be supported as indicated by dotted lines in Figures 1 and 2 when the brush heads are disposed within the casing compartment.
their rear or outer end portions flared as at 15..
The hinged or swinging back wall or cover 7 of the casing is provided with a forward extension upon its lower end as at 16 adapted to move'to a position beneath the bottom wall of the casing and to engage the rear sides of the brush shanks shown in Figure 2 For facilitating insertion of the brushes, the slots 14 have for holding the brushes within the slots 14,
th extension 16 being provided with a depending flange as at 17 by means of which the brushes are threaded against swinging movement and maintained in a vertical po-' sition within the narrow portions of the slots 14. The flange 17 also rovides means whereby the user may rea ily swin the cover 7 rearwardly to open position w on it is desired to use any of the brushes the same holds.
From the above descrigtion, it is believed that the' construction an operation as well as the advantages of the present invention will be readil understood and appreciated by those skil ed in the art, it bein noted that the hereindesoribed device is o panicular benefit for household use, wherein individual tooth brushes are employed by the several members of a family.
What I claim as new is:
In a sanitary tooth brush holder of th character described, a substantially rectangular horizontally elongated casing having a spending swinging cover at the back thereof and d1vided into a plurality of compartments by means of transverse partitions,
aeiaeea said wsing having a bottom wall provided with a plurality'of transverse slots opening through the rear edge thereof for reoeption of a Epiurality of tooth brushes, one of said slots compartments, means to support said oaslng in spaced relation from a support,
said casing having a transparent front wall NINA MAE MAHAFFY..
