WASTE FIXTURE.

Be it known that I, JAMES FRASER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Hillcrest7 Edgemoor, in the county of New Castle and State of Delaware, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Waste Fixtures, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention consists in an improved waste fitting for baths and the like of the type comprising a tubular waste valve the bore Vof which serves as an overfiowpassage, and the general object of the invention is to pro-vide a simple and ettectivefitting of the character specified having provisions whereby a drain pipe4 may be interchangeably connected to the fitting to extend away from the latter in either of two directions at an angleto one another.
The various features of novelty which characterize my invention arev pointed out with particularity in the claims annexed to and forming a part of the specification; for a better understanding of the invention however, its advantages and specific objects attained with its use, reference should be had to the accompanying drawings and descriptive matter in which I have illustrated and described a preferred embodiment of my invention.

In the drawings I have illustra-ted the use of my invention in connection with a bath tub A, having any usual or suitable water supply provisions B, and formed with a waste opening A at its lower end to which one end of a horizontal waste outlet pipe C is connected in the usual manner. The other end of the pipe C is connected to the inlet D of my improved waste fitting part D. v
The fitting part D is in effect a valve casing formed with inlet and outlet chambers D2 and D3 separated by an intervening partition D4 which is shaped to provide a seat for the lower end of the tubular waste valve E. The valve seat D thus provided is in the forni of a vertical cylinder open chambers D2 and D3, though the bore of the valve E then forms part of an overflow connection communicating with the outlet chamber through-the open lower end of the valve, and communicating with the inlet chamber D? through the open upper end of the valve E, and through the annular space between the valve E and a tubular element F, which has its lower end threaded or otherwise secured in an opening D5 in the` top wall of the casing part D and forming an overflow outlet from the inlet chamber D2.
The outlet chamber D?` is provided with two outlet openings, DG and D?. The outlet D6 leads downward from the bottoni ot the fitting part D, and the outlet D7 leads laterally away from the fitting D usually as shown in alignment with the pipe C. The outlet openings, D6 and D7, terminate at their outer ends in nipple portions externally threaded and are each formed ,with a seat for the drain pipe K which may be interchangeably inserted in either nipple, as shown in Figs. land 2. lVhen inserted in either nipple, leakage is prevented by a suitable packing held in place by a gland I threaded on that nipple, while t-he other outlet opening is then closed by a cap J threaded on the corresponding nipple. As shown the upper end of the valve E is secured 'to a spider member E connected by a member G to a valve operating mechanism, shown as comprising a horizontal shaft member Il suitably journalled in a slab a, located above the tub A. The shaft H is provided at one end with an operating handle H2, and at its opposite end with a crankpin H in operativev arrangement with the` upper end of the rod G.
With the described arrangement, when thevalve member E is' in "its lower closed position Vshown in Fig. l, communication between the inlet port D and either of the outlet ports DG and D7 is closed except for the overflow passage including the bore of Cil the valve E and the annular space between it andthe tube element F. `Vhen the valve member E is raised, as shown in Fig. 2, water entering the fitting D through the inlet D may pass directly to whichever of the outlets DG and D7 is then connected to the d rain pipe K.
The described construction is obviously simple and effective for its intended purpose and permits of the interchangeable connection of the pipe K to either of the outlets DG and D7, thus making it unnecessary tocarry two types of fitting parts D in stock in order to supply the demand for fittings to be used with drain pipe connections leading downwardly andfor those leading laterally away from the fit-tine, The fitting part D readily permits of the machining necessary to insure a proper seating ofthe valveinem- 'ber E, .and to avoid leakage. Advantageollsly the iitting part Dis 'provided with a lugD'serving asa stop to limit the movement of the valve member E in the closing direction, and preferably the parts are arranged and proportioned, as shown, so that the normal operation of the valve member l-l will not lift the lower end of the .valve member E out of engagement with the upper portion of its,` cylindrical valve seat.
lhile in accordance with the provisions of the statutes, I have illustrated and described the best form of embodiment in my invention now dknown to me, it will be; apparent t those slilledin the art that changes may be made in the form of apparatus disclosed without departing from the spirit of my invention as set forth ,in the appended claims and that in some cases certain fea-- tures of my invention =may be used to advantage without a corresponding use of other features. Having now described ,my invention, what l claim as new'and desire to secure by Lettersr Patent, is:
l; A waste valve comprising achambered casing element havingvan inlet chamber with an inlet theretoand an outlet chamber with Aa plurality of outlet openings therefrom and a partition between said chambers shaped to provide a valve seat in the yform of a cylinder open at its lower Vend to said outlet chamber and having alateral portion cut away, and a tubular valve axially movablelin said seatbetween a lower closed position in which it closescommnnication between said chamybers except for an overow connection formed in part by the bore of said valve, and an upper open position in which said chambers are in direct communication vthrough said cut away seat.
2. A waste valve comprising a chambered casingelement having .an inletv chamber with an inlet thereto, and an outlet chamber with a plurality of outlet openings therefrom, and a partition between said chambers shaped to provide a valve seat in the form of a cylinder open at its lower end to said outlet chamber, and open at its upper end to said inlet chamber and having a lateral portion cut away, and a port in its upper portion substantially coaxial with said valve, a tubular valve member axially movable in said seat between -a lower closed position in which it closes communication betweensaid chambers except for an overflow connection formed inpart by the borey of said valve, and an upper open position in which said chainbers are in direct communication thro-ugh said cutaway seat, `and a tubular element having its lower end connected lto said casing in communication with said port and surrounding the upperportionofsaid valve and separated therefrom by -a space forming part of said overflow passage.
3. A waste fitting part in the form of :a chambered body having an inlet chamber with an inlet thereto and an outlet chamber and a plurality of outlets therefrom,.and Ya partition between said chambersshaped to provide a cylindrical valve seat open at its lower end to said outlet chamber -and also open at its upper end and having a lateral portion cut away whereby a tubular valve seated yin said .seat closes direct communication between said chambers while its bore forms part of an overflow connection between the chambers and when said valveis lifted, the chambers are in directcommunicatioirthrough the cut away portion offsaid seat.
4. A waste tting part in the form of a Y chamber body vhaving an inlet chamber with an inlet thereto and an outlet chamber and a plurality of outlets therefrom, and a partition between said `chambers shaped t0 provide a cylindrical valve lseat open at its lower end to said 'outletchamben and also open at its upper end and havingua lateral portion cut away whereby ,a tubular-valve seated in said seat closes direct communication between said chambers while its b ore forms part of `an overflow connect-ion between the chambers, and when said-valve is lifted the chambers .are in direct communication through the cut away portion of .said seat, said `part being also formed with `an .upper port larger in diameter than, and Asurrounding said valve seat and communicating with said inlet chamber. y
