UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DENNIS L. HUFF, OF BAY CITY, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLOTHES-DRIERS.
v Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 51,289, dated May 26,1874; application filed October 18, 1873.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DENNIS L. HUFF, of Bay City, in the county of Bay and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Clothes-Reel, of which the following is a specification:
. The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved clothes-reel. Fig. 2 is partly a plan and partly a horizontal section of the plate to which the arms are attached and some of the arms. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of Fig. 2 on the line was, and Fig. at is a horizontal section of Fig. 1 on the line y y.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the disk or plate, to which the arms B are attached so as to radiate from the center, and by which they are mounted on the top of the post B to revolve horizontally, the said plate or disk being provided with a spindle, G, which rests in a step, D, at the bottom of a large socket, E, in the post, and has a bearing, F, at the top. This plate or disk is also to cover the socket in the post, and prevent it from filling with snow and water, by which the spindle would otherwise freeze fast in cold weather. To secure the arms to this disk, I provide the ears G on the upper side at the edge, and the boss H at the center, and make a hole through the ears and others through the boss, coinciding with them radially, but descending from the ears to the center of the boss, with descending top and bottom walls, and unite the arms together at the inner ends, so that while they ascend from the center they are firmly secured in the ears and the boss, so as not to wear and work loose at the points of connection, as they do in other reels constructed on this plan. or disk A, I provide the strengthening-ribs J, which unite in the spindle at the center, and strengthen and brace it at its junction with the plate, besides strengthening the plate itself. The post being made of metal toavoid the use and the fitting of the metal cap to the top and the usual bush to the socket, it is nec 'essary to make small, in order to make it light as possible. I provide it with the strengthenin gribs K and a strengthening collar, L, around it at the bottom of the socket, where it is subject to the greatest strain by the spindle. To fasten the ends of the wires which .hold the clothes in the arms of the reel, I pass hub H, combined with thearms B, in the manner described, to serve not only as a watershed, but a base and support for the said arms. 2. A meta-l post for a clothes-reel, having the socket E, step D, ribs K, and collar L, all constructed. and arranged substantially as specified.
