PLATFORM ATTACHll/LENT FOR WINDOWS.
Applicationfiled April 4, 1923. Serial No. 629,864.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTON NELS N, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Saul; Center, in the county of Stearns and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Platform Attachments for Windows, of which the following is a specification.v
M invention relates to improvementsin plat orm attachments for windows, and itconsists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements herein described and claimed. l
An object of the invention is to provide a device of simplified construction which is adapted to be detachably secured to the frame ofa window ina building an'd which affords facilities for supporting a person in a. relatively elevated position ,exteriorly of the building for the purpose of cleaning, or repairing-the window or for any other purpose.
A further object of the invention, is to provide an attachment of the character described which is adapted to be adjusted'for application to windows of different widths within a considerable range of sizes.
A still further obj ectof the inventioiris to provide an attachment of ,thecha-racter described which can be conveniently and easilyjattached to or detached from a window without the use of anyspecial tools, and
vwhichis adapted to be folded or collapsed into small compass for thepurpose of transportation or storage.
Astillfurther object of the-invention is .to provide an-attachnient ofthe character 'descri'becl which is relatively safe when in use and embodies means tending to prevent any person supported thereon from accidental displacement therefrom.
Other objects and advantages will be ap parent from the following description,,considere'd conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View showing a practicalembod1ment of the invention in applied position on the frame of awindow, the; lower sash of the window and portions 1 of the supportingstructure therefor being shown lll'VGllZl'CiLl SQQtlOIl; I
t Figure 2- s abottom plan VIEW, of frag -mentary portion of the device in detached position, and
Figured: is aside elevation of a fragmen- '-tary' po rtion of the. device detached In carrying out my lIlVGlltl0I1,I provide a substantially flat base or platform designated generally 1 which may comprise a: pair of similar transverse sections 2 and 3 respec tively arranged in juxtaposed adjacent relation and hingedly connected together at their adjacent edges, as indicated at at. The sections 2 and3 which may be boards are normally held in extended or outwardly swung position in respect to each other or in other words insuch position as to lie in the same plane by a pair of bars 5 which extend longitudinally: of the platform. at predetermined distances from the side edges ends of the sections Qan'd 3 and which are secured to the respective sections 2 and :3 by boltsiandnuts 6. The bars 5 are spaced from the under sides of thesection's 2 and by spacingand stifiening blocks 7 and 81espectively through "which the bolts extend, the strips 7 and 8 atcorrespon'ding endsof the sections 2 and?) being disposed in align- 1113 With'eachother withthe adjacent ends thereof spaced slightly and beveled oppositely as indicated f and 8 respectively so-jithat the adjacent, endsof aligned StIiiPS 7 and "8 divergeto'ward their lower sic es. V
The sections 2 and 3 ofthetplatforin have spaced apart series of bolt receiving open ingsformed therein to extend longitudinall y thereof as indicated at 9" and the respective aforesaid bolts {may be projected through the bolt receiving; openings 9; of the several series 'selectively sons to vary the, spacing of t lie bars fiffrom" the 'sitlespf the platform tions 2 and V3 and ,thatthe latter may then be folded to lie flatwise one uponithe other and to thus occupy but relatively small ofthe platform orin other words from the i space, assum ng of coursethat the'hereinafter described superstructure, on the platform "has first been removed. I
The bars 5 constitute the horizontal members of brackets for, engaging with t-he sills 10 of window frames, andiwiththe outer faces of a vertical wall llffor, the purpose of attaching the, platform to a. window sill and for, supporting the. platform. in a position in. which partly disposedg upon the-win llO dow,-sill, and extending beyond J the outer end to provide a pair of spaced apart axially alignedsleeve portions 18 adapted to receive therebetween a sleeve portion 14 formed atone end of each of a pair of bars 15, the
respective sleeves '13 of the two bars 5 be ing axially aligned and the sleeves 1 f being arranged in register with the sleeves 13 so that each bar 15 will be hingedly attached to the corresponding bar 5 when a rod 16 is arranged to extend through all of said aligned sleeves. Cotter pins 17 are extended through transverse openings in the extending extreme end portions of the rod 16 to prevent such axial movement of the latter as would result in its moving out of engagement with the sleeve portions of the two bars 5. Each bar 15 constitutes the second member of each of the pair of brackets provided for the purpose hereinbefore setout. The bars 15 are connected at their free ends'by a'rod .18 whichextendsslidably through alignedsleeve portions 19 formed at the free ends of the bars 15 and which is prevented from disengaging the sleeve portions 19 cotter pins 20 engaged with the extending extreme end portions thereof.
The bars Shave tongue portions 2lstruck upwardly therefrom in position to enter the 7 space between the diverging ends of p the pairs of spacing and reinforcing strips 7 and 8. These tongue portions are bent-to provlde axially aligned sleeves22 through which a rod 23 extends, The extending extreme end portions of the rod 23 also are provid'edwith cotter pins 9A for holding the rod against such axial movement as would result in its disengaging th'e s'leeves The, hook portions 12 are fashioned at their free ends to provide aligned sleeves 2 f through which a rod 25' extends, the latter 'being held from moving out of'engagement with the sleeves 24 by cotterpins 26 engaged with the extending extreme end portions thereof; a l. a v
l/Vith the arrangement described, the
corresponding members ofuthe two brackets are securely stayed to eachother. The
brackets-canbe slid on the rods 16, '18, 23 i and 25 when detached 'from'the sections 2 and 3 of the platform to permit adjustment of the brackets inrespect'to each other for engagement with'the sills of windows of different widths, the brackets being held by the platform will be firmly stayed to the wall and thus braced at its outer ends.-
A superstructure on the platform serves to shield personssupported on the platform from the gaze of persons adjacent to the building and also protects the occupants of the platform from the wind. This superstructure comprises a guard frame including standards 28 and 29 respectivelyfat the outer corners of th s platform and other standards 30 and 31 respectively upstanding from points adjacent to the side edges of the platform and at appreciable distances from the inner end of the platfo-rms'being located a distance from the innerend of the platform sufficient to permit the lower sash 32 of the window to be closed and when in closed position to lie in a verticalplane lo,- cated between the plane of the inner end of the platform and that of the standards .30 and 31'. The standards 29 and 31are connected and'stayed together at points adj acent to their upper and lowerends by transverse connectors 83 and 3t'respectively.
adj acen-t totheir upper and lower ends. With this arrangement a stable frame structure other suitable fastening means to certain or all ofthe frame members leaving the upper and inner side of the frame-structure open so that a person may have accessto the platform through the window and when on the platform may move freely without his movements being retarded the guard provided this framestructure preferably being closed at thesides and outer end by 'a fabric 39 secured by stitching 4:0 or any U-shaped frame 42 having the arms thereof fashioned "at-their free ends to provide eyelets through which 'a rod 44 extending horizontally between the standards 28 and 30' at points intermediate the upper and.
lower ends of the latter extend, the U shaped s frame 42 having a strip of fabric arranged in spanning relation to the arms and being secured to the latter by rows of stitching as or the like. The fabric 45 constitutes the article supporting member of the shelf and the latter may be releasably held in a horizontal position by hanger arms 47 swingingly attached at their upper ends to the transverse connector 35 and having hook portions 48 at their lower ends adapted for engagement with the web portion of the U-shaped frame. .When not in use, the hanger arms 47 may be disengaged from the frame 42 and the shelf may then be swung downwardly into vertical and out of the way position. I
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood. The device is simple in construction and can be readily attached to and detached from the sill of a window frame of ordinary construction without the use of any too-ls and without any changes in the construction ofthe window frame being required. lVhen detached from the window frame, the device can be disassembled and the parts thereof packed to take up but relatively little space.
WVhile I have described the attachment as being adapted for the use of a person engaged in the work of cleaning or rep-airing windows, yet it will be apparent that the device is capable of other uses. For example, the platform 1 may be of sufficient area to permit of a bed, being supported thereon for the use of invalids and others who desire to sleep out of doors. The guard structure would protect such person from the gaze of persons e-Xteriorly of th building and also would afford protection from the wind.
Obviously, my invention is susceptible of embodiment in formsv other than that illustrated in the accompanying drawings and I therefore consider as my own all modifications and adaptations of the form of the device herein described which fairly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
I claim;:- A device of the character described comprising a platform adapted to be'partially disposed upon the sill of a window frame and'to extend beyond the outer edge of the latter, means carried by the platform for engaging with the window sill and with the outer face of a wall provided with the window sill for holding said'platform in the aforesaid posit-ion in respect to the window sill, a superstructure onthe platform having portions upstanding from the sides and outer end of the platform, and a shelf swingably supported on the superstructure, said shelf being foldablevfrom horizontal posi tion to a position in which it is disposed flatwise against one of said upstanding portions of the superstructure. I
ANTON NELSON.
