OTTO KOLSTAD, OF IIOLYOKE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO 0. F. CHURCH MANU- FACTUBING (10., OF HOLYOKE, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHU- HINGE FOR THE SEATS AND COVERS WATER-CLOSETS AND THE LIKE.
Application filed February 6, 1923. Serial No. 617,244.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, O'r'ro KoLs'rAo, a citizen ofthe United States, and a resident of the city of Holyoke, Hampden County, State of Massachusetts have invented an Improvement in Ifinges for the Seats and Covers of Water-Closets and the like, of
which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to hinges for the seats and covers of water-closets and the like, and aims to provide devices of the character designated which shall be simple and cheap in construction, which may be readily applied to the seats and covers of waterclosets, and which, when so applied, shall be very convenient and satisfactory in operation, with little likelihood of the hinge parts to become displaced or otherwise injuriously afi'ected. It is a further object of the present invention to provide devices of the character designated which, while accomplishing the desired results already specified, are free from the necessity of employing such removable fastening means as screws, bolts and the like, which would make the device more diilicult to assemble and to apply, and would render the same less'neat and attractive in ap earance when applied.
n the accompanying specification I shall describe, and in the annexed drawing show, several illustrative embodiments of the present invention. It is, however, to be clearly understood that my invention is not limited to the specific embodiments thereof which are herein shown and described for purposes of illustration only,
Referring to the drawings, wherein I have illustrated'the aforesaid illustrative embodiments of the present invention: 7
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a combined hinge, seat and cover, showing the cover in raised position;
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional View taken along the line of 22-of Fig. 3;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the device showing the cover in closed or horizontal position; and
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2 of another embodiment of the present invention.
Referring now more particularly to the illustrative embodiment of the present invention shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawing, S indicatesthe seat of a watercloset or the like and C the cover thereof.
At H I have indicated the hinges which may be used for rotating the seat or cover into .open or closed position as desired.
Each of the hinges H, of which two are here shown as bein employed, which hinges are substantially i entical, so that only one of them need here be described in detail, comprises a head portion 11, a neck portion 12, a flange portion 13, and a lower threaded or bolt portion 14. The rod or bolt portion 14 of each hinge post 10 is provided with the threads 15 so that the hinge posts may be readily positioned and fastened in place by any suitable fastening means, not here deemed necessary to be shown, in the porcelain of the water-closet bowl, which latter likewise does not form a part of the present inventionand need not therefore be illustrated here.
Attached to, and preferably forming a part of, the head 11 and the hinge post 10, is a short post or pintle 16 about which the hinge plates 17, carrying the seat S and the cover 0, may be rotated. Each hinge plate 17 comprises a main body portion 18, to which is securely attached, as by being made integral therewith, a short post or pintle 19 about which the cover C may be rotated. Adjacent its lower end, the body portion 18 of the hinge plate 17 is provided with a" tubular fastening or attaching member 20 within which the short post or pintle 16 of the hinge post 10 bears.
I provide means, preferably associated with each hinge plate 17, as by being formed integral therewith, for preventing the rotation of the hinge plate when applied to the water-closet seat S or like article. Such means, generally. indicated by reference character 20, preferably comprises means associated with the sleeve 20, as b being made integral With the sleeve 20, or preventing any undesirable rotation of either hinge plate 17 with respect-to the watercloset seator like article S. For this purpose, I provide each hinge plate 17 with the wedge-shaped fins 20 of which two are here shown, although only one, or as many as three or more may be em loyed, if so desired. The wedge-shaped ns or equivalent locking means 20 are preferably provided with rather sharp cutting or biting edges 20, for a purpose subsequently to be described in greater detail. It may here be stated that each hinge plate 17, comprising the body portion 18, the post or pintle 19, the sleeve 20, and the wedge-shaped fins 20", are preferably cast in a single piece, so as to give the hinge plate the desired strength, rigidity and securing efficiency.
The short post or pintle 19, adjacent the upper port-ion of the hinge plate 17 enters an opening 21 in the cover C containing the bushing22 forming a bearing for the cover C in its rotation about the post or pintle 19. It will be noted that the tubular fastening or attachin sleeve 20 adjacent the lower portion of t e hinge plate 17 is secured against rotation in the opening 23 of the seat S by means of the locking or keying means 20. Such means operates to securely bind or wedge the tubular member 20 in lace within the opening 23 of the seat S. his desirable action, as also the application of each hinge plate 17 to the seat S, is facilitated by the sha particu arly the sharp o-r'cutting edges 20 of the. same. The shape of the members 20" enables each hinge plate 17 to be driven into the corresponding opening 23 as if it were a nail, the hinge plate 17 when once driven into place, being firmly held, by the wedging and cutting action of the members 20", against rotation within the seat S and also against the too ready removal of the hinge p ate The manner of assembling the aforesaid illustrative embodiment 'of the resent invention and the advanta 'es of t e same in use will be substantially clear from the foregoing description and may be briefly summarized as follows: The seat S, provided with the openings 23, and the cover C, provided with the openings 21 containinlg the bushings 22, are assembled in proper re ation with respect to the hinge plates 17 by driving the tubular fastening members 20 of the hinge lates 17 into.the respective openings 23 of t e seat S. This action may be carried out in the manner already suggested above.
At the same time, the short posts or pintles 19 adjacent the upper ends of the hinge plates 17 are caused to enter the openings 21 of the cover C containing the bushings 22.
In this relation of the cover C to the seat S and the hinge plates 17, it will be noted fi that the cover 0, the seat S, and the hinge plates 17, are assembled as a unitary cup of elements, with the hinge lates 17 rigidly and non-rotatably fastened 'y means of the members 20 by frictional engagement of the latter within the openings 23 of the seat S. The cover C is rotatably held in position about the short posts or pintles 19 on the upper ends of the hinge plates 17. These desirable results are accomplished entirely without the use of any such external or other fastening means as screws, threaded posts, bolts or pintles, and without the use of the binding members 20 and facilitated by character 17',
of any removable fastening means of any sort whatsoever, except the hinge plates 17 themselves. The a$embl of the seat, cover and hinges is completed by bringing the short sts or pintles 16 of the hinge posts 10 to liar within the sleeves 20 in the openin s 23 0f the seat S. r
he threaded bolts may now be positioned in suitable openings in the porcelain of the bowl of the water-closet or equivalent device, by an suitable fastening means, such s nuts an bolts, which may be applied to securel fasten the seat, cover and the associated iiin s in place. It will be ap arent from the oregoing description that have provided a combined water-closet seat, cover and hinges which may be very economically, readily and cheaply assembled without the consumption of much time or labor, and without the use of the usual unsightly fastening means, such as screws, rods, bolts, or other removable fastenin means.
The advantages of the oregoing construction and the conveniences of the same in use WilLbe readily apparent from the foregoin description and ma be briefly summarize as follows: When t e cover C is raised, the same will readily rotate about the pintles 19 of the hinge plates 17, which latter are rigidly fastened in the seat S. This rotation is means of the bushings 22 in the openings 21 of the cover C providing bearings for the posts or pintles 19. When the seat S is raised, this carries the hinge plates 17 with it, since these hinge plates are, as already described in detail above rigidly fastened in the seat S by means 0 the tubular fastening means 20 frictionally enga ing within the openings 23 of the seat S -This rotation of the combined watercloset seat S and cover C together with the hinge plates 17 is facilitated by means of the bearing surfaces provided by the interiors of the tubular fastening means 20 about the posts or pintles 16.
Turning now to the embodiment of the invention illustrated in Fi 4 of the drawing, the same is substantia 1 similar to the embodiment already described above and illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, of the drawing, except that in place of the wedge-like us or equivalent locking means 20 for preventing the rotation of the hinge lates 17 with respect to the seat S, I provi e the hinge plate, here designated by reference with one or more locking members, here shown as two pointed members 20" for preventing the rotation of each hinge plate 17 with respect to the seat S. The tubular member is here designated by reference character 20. Otherwise the construction of the device of this embodiment is the same as for the embodiment already described, and the advantages of the same in construction, assembly, use and operation are the same as those for the device already set forth above. It is only necessary to state that the pointed members 20" serve in place of the wed -shaped members 20" to prevent the rotation of the hinge plates 17' with respect to the seat S", these menibers being so shaped as to permit the ready application of the hinge lates 17 to the seat S and the frictions engagement of said hinge plates with the seat to prevent relative rotation of the same once the hinge plates have been applied to the seat.
The present application is an improvement over the invention described and claimed in my copending application filed Janua 1,* 1923, Serial No. 610,080, entitled fSeat and cover hinges for waterclosets and the like.
