Description

Out. 21 192% 1512,49?
O. L. SOBLEY HUOK Filed Avril 28 1924 WITNESS: ATTORNEY Patented Oct. 21, 1924.
UNITED STATES ORSIN IA. SOBLEY, OF ElI-IELSVILLE, ALABAMA.
HOOK.
Application filed April 28, 1924.. Serial No. 709,623.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORSIN L. SoBLny, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ethelsville, in the county of Pickens and State of Alabama, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hooks, of which the following is a specification.
\ This invention relates to a hook device,
the general object of the invention being to provide means for attaching a trace to a single-tree, so that the trace can be easily and quickly detached from the single-tree whenever desired and even though the trace is under a strain.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like 5 or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a view showing the invention in use.
Figure 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional View through the device.
Figure 3 is a plan view of Figure 2.
In these views, 1 indicates a channelshaped supporting member, which has a ring 2 pivotally supported at one end thereof by 5 at its outer end, engages the channelshaped part of the member and is normally held in said member by means of a pin 5 in the bight of the member engaging a notch 6 in the bar and by the L-shaped lever Twhich is pivoted to the body 1 by the pin 8 and has its short arm arranged to press the bar against the bight with the pin 5 engaging the recess 6 when said lever is swung downwardly, as shown in full lines in Figure 2. The lever is held in this position by means of the teats 9 formed on the upper edges of the channel-shaped body engaging the de= pressions 10 in the lever, the body having a spring action so that the sides can spring apart to permit the lever to be forced from between the sides of the body to a position shown in dotted lines in Figure 2 which will means of the eye 3. A bar 4, having a hookpermit a leaf spring 11 in the body to force upwardly the rod 4 and thus free the notch 6 therein from the pin 5 in order to permit. the bar to be pulled from the body. As shown in Figure 1, the ring 2 is adapted to be placed on the hook of the single-tree A while the hook 5 on bar 4: is adapted to engage the terminal ring of the trace B. With the lever swung downwardly and holding the bar a in engagement with the pin 5, the trace is firmly connected with the singletree. If the horses should be mired, for in stance, and the traces are under strain so that it is impossible to get enough slack to enable the rings to be detached from the hooks, the lever 7 is swung upwardly so as to permit the spring 11 to force the bar t upwardly and thus free the notch 6 therein from the pin 5' so that the strain will pull the bar 4 out of the body and thus free the horses from the wagon or other implement to which they are attached.
This device is useful inlogging, lumbering and the like where occasions frequently arise rendering it. necessary to quickly and easily free the horses from the single-trees.
It is thought from the foregoing descripi tion that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is z- A. device of the class described comprising a body having fastening means at one end thereof, a member having fastening means at one end thereof, one part having a notch and the other part having a projec tion engaging the notch for preventing movement of the member in the body, a lever pivoted to the body, an extension thereon for engaging the member for holding the projection in the notch when the lever is in one position but permitting movement of the member to free the projection from the notch when said lever is in its other position, and spring means for forcing the member upwardly to free the projection from the notch.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
ORSIN L. SOBLEY.
