IMPROVEMENT IN SCHOOL-SEATS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. lLQ, dated May 26, 1874 application filed December 15, 1873.
ments. Fig. 2 is a central vertical cross ection. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of an ear projecting from the standard, and constituting the female half of the seat-hinge. Fig. 4 is a perspective view, from the inner side, or one of the seat-supports, being the male halt oi' the seathinge.
A A are standards, of any approved suitable pattern, secured together by ties or rungs, and by the front, back, and bottom ci' the book-receptacle B. About midway on `the front oi' the standards, ears u. project,
which are circular in form, and have an eye through their centers. Each ear is cast on the inner side of the standard, so as to leave a curved rim, I), thereon, and a projection or stop, c, is formed at the upper end oi' said rim, clearly shown in Fig. 3. C C are castmeta-l arms, having lianges l d between, and onto one of which the boards forming the seat are secured. so that the seat may be shaped accordingly, and have circular ends c to conform to the shape of the ears a, on which the)Y are fitted by the pins f entering the holes in said ears. These ends c are made with a rim or flange, g, which rides on the outer edge of the ears, and the edge of ends c works in the rim b. A lug, h, is formed on the edge t' on a line with the pin'f,and has' a piece of rubber or other material on it, the object of the lug be-` ing to abut against the stop o to hold the seat in' position for use, as in Fig. l, the rubber,
Sac., serving todeaden or prevent noise in lowering the seat. The end of the flange g abuts against a shoulder, la, on the ear, thus relieving the lug h and stop c of undue pressure, and, consequently, strengthening the These arms are properly curved,
seat. Then not in use, the seat is simply turned up, as in Fig. 2. The desk-leaf D is composed ot castanetal arms E, having iianges i between, and onto which the board is secured. These arms are hinged to circular plates F on the ends of the standards. In these plates a slot, l, is made, extending from their centers upwardly at about an angle of forty-tive degrees, and at the juncture ol the plates with the standards; and on said standards two circular recessed ways, m n, are made, on the inner one of which a stop, o, is formed. These devices form the female portion or' the hinge,
whereby the desk-leai is secured to the standards. The male portion is on the ends G of the leaiarms E A pintle, p, in the center of said end iits in the slot l. A ilange, r, rides on the outer edge of the plates F, and a stop, s, abuts against the stop o, which, in connection with the lower end oi' flange r, resting against the edge of the standard, holds the desleleail in position for use. The lug t rides on way fn, and serves to guide the movements of the leaf, while the edge n of end G rides in the way m to steady the same. A curved bar, H, is placed between the plates 011 which the leaf turns. A washer, w, is interposed between the plate and end to lessen friction. When the desk-leaf is down, as in Fig. 2, and it is desired to use it, it is raised up until the stop .5^ comes in contact with stop o, when the pintle falls into a notch in the end of the slot I, and the end of flange r abuts against the standard edge, so that when ones hold thereon is released the leal' will be supported for use, as in Fig. l. To fold the leatl down again, it should be pulled up or raised, so as to free the pintle from the notch in the slot, when the object can be readily accomplished.
What I claim. as my invention is- In a school-desk having a hinged seat, the
.arms C, provided with a tlange, g, pin f, and
stop lh, in combination with the ears a, recessed at b, and having the stops c and it, substantially as shown and described.
