To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, OSCAR .MILTON HATCHEP. and JAMES CHAPMAN CAMPBELL, citizens of the United States, residing in the city of Mankato, county of Blue Earth, and State of Minnesota, havel invented new and useful Improvements `in Arbor Presses, of which the following isV a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in arbor presses.
Broadly the object of the invention is to provide a device of the present nature including means for conveniently and effectively enlarging the range of use thereof.
More specically, it is our object to provide arbor or other object supporting means in connection with an arbor press, whereby various objects of different dimensions may be variously held to suit the work to be performed.
Vith the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear in the following description, the invention resides in the novel combination and arrangement of parts and v in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a device embodying our invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, portions thereof being broken away to show parts otherwise concealed; Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the upper support; Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view taken through the lower support as on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1 and Fig. 5 includes a number of object holding members applicable to said supports.
Referring to the drawings, wherein similar reference characters are employed to designate similar parts throughout the several views, we have illustrated an arbor press including a conventional bed 10, and a neck-like standard 11. Mounted for vertically reciprocable movements in said standard is the usual rack-bar 12 or pres-.- sure member. The ordinary shaft 13, turned by a handle 14, is equipped with the usual gear 15 meshing with teeth 16 of the rackbar 12. In the present instance, a base 17 supplying a mounting of substantial height is provided, the bed 10 being anchored on said base. Two object supporting sections A and B are provided for several or conjoint use to enlarge the capacity of the press. rlhe upper support A is an elongated troughlike structure designed to stand on end'on the bed 10, a base flange 18 being formed.
at the bottom thereof. In horizontal cross Y section said support is substantially semicircular, the sides thereof being projected slightly forwardly on tangential lines. In applying this support A, the fiange 18 is secured to the bed 10 by means of screw-s 19 in position wherein the open side of the support faces forwardly (Figs. 1 anda-2) and the channel therein registers with the object receiving recess 10a in said bed. Anyone of spaced horizontal seats 20, formed within the support A, receive any one of object braces 21 or an object rest 22 (F ig. 5). The rest 22 is a simple -plate curved at the back thereof to conform with the back of the support A, the edges of said plate at the sides and near the front thereof being straight to conform with the limited straight side portions of said support. The object braces 21 resemble the rest 22, except that recesses 23 of different dimensions are formed therein.
The supporting section B is similar to the supporting section A, the principal differences residing in the greater length of the former and the added anchoring flange 24- at the upper end thereof. Said section B, proportioned in accordance with our preference stands with its base flange 18b on the floor and the anchoring flange 24 snugly beneath the bed 10, anchoring screws 25 be` ing supplied to secure said latter flange to said bed. Seats 2()b in the supporting section B freelyreceive the object braces 21 and rest 22 like the seats 2O in the supporting section A. Said supporting sections A and B may be used separately or together, or may be entirely dispensed with, if desired. In using either section alone, the rest 22 and selected bracing members 21 may be appropriately arranged to accord with the work at hand. In using both sections, advantage of the combined lengths thereof can be taken, said rest 22 and the selected bracing members 21 being arranged to suit.
From the foregoing, it will be understood that a press, fitted with our present improve-ment, may be quickly and easily adapt!- ed to wide ranges of use and that work upon objects applied thereto may be effectively carried out. Y
Changes in the specific form of our invention, as herein disclosed, may be made Within the scope of what is claimed Without departing from the spirit of our invention.
Having described our invention, what We claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a press including a bed and a vertically' reciprocable pressure member, of an elongated support open at the front thereof, saldi` support being adapted to be held in alignment With said pressure member and designed to freely receive uprighted objects to be 'worked upon by said member, a plurality of vertically spaced seats Within said support, a plurality or' recessed object braces and an object rest, said braces and rest being interchangeably and selectively applicable to said seats.
2. The combination with a press including a bed and a vertically reciprocable pressure member, of an elongated support adapted to rest on said bed, said support being adapted to freely receive uprighted objects to be Worked upon by said pressure member, a plurality of vertically spaced seats Within said support and a plurality of object holding members interchangeably and selectively applicable to said seats.
3. The combination with a press including a vertically reciprocable pressure member, of an upright object receiving support held in alignment with respect to said pressure member, said support having a plurality of vertically spaced seats therein, and a plurality of object holding members interchangeably and selectively applicable to Said seats.
