IMPROVEMENT IN HOLLOW AUGERS.
Specification forming part of Lettt rs Patent No. H51, 5 75, dated May 19, 1874; application filed February 11, 1874.-
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, J. DUDLEY WAITE, of Hamden, in the county of New l'laven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new In provement in Hollow Angers; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1, a side view 5 and in Fig. 2, a cutting-end view.
This invention relates to an improvement in what are known as hollow augers-that is, the tool which is used for forming the tenon on the outer end of carriage-wheel spokes and for like purposes.
One great difficulty in the use of this class of tools is to prevent the accidental displacement of the cutter, in consequence of which the diameter of the tenon is varied.
The object of'this invention is to so seat the cutter that it cannot be accidentally displaced and also to prevent the splitting or forming of a burr at the edge of the cut; and the invention consists in making the seat transversely concave and the'cutter correspondingly concave-convex, or gouge shape, as more fully hereinafter described.

I do not broadly claim a gouge-shaped cut ter set in a concave seat.
I claim as my invention- As an article of manufacture, the hereindescribed hollow auger, consisting of the body A, tang B, flange C, throat D, and cutter E, when the seat for the said cutter is made trans- "erselyconcave and the cutter correspondingly concave-convex, substantially as specified.
