Description

Oct. 14 1924.
H. B. SHRECKENGAST WIRE TWISTING TOOL FOR CONCRETE FORMS Filed Jan. 22, 1923 INVENTOR Patented Oct. 14, 1924.
UNITED STATES HARVEY B. SHRECKENGAST, OF BINGHAMTON, NEW
YORK.
WIRE-TWISTING TOOL FOR CONCRETE FORMS.
Application filed. January 22, 1923. Serial No. 614,071.
1/ 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARVEY financia- ENGAST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Binghamton, in the county of 'Broome and State of New York, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire'lwisting Tools for Concrete Forms, of-which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to wire twisting tools for twisting together the adjacent strands of wire; also for twisting the wires holding together the forms for concrete work both within the form and on the outer opposite sides of the forms; also for untwisting wires and having in the head thereof a rotating disk with means therein for retaining the wire removable within the head and with means in the base of the handle for grasping the wires for twisting in a retaining but removable position.
Vith these objects in view, my invention consists in certain novel features of con-- struction and arrangement of parts as will be more particularly hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim; reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. l is a side view of my device.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of my device.
Fig. 3 is a side view of a fragmentary part of my device as applied to a wire.
Fig. 4 is a perspective View of a fragmentary part of my device as applied to a wire in concrete forms.
Fig. 5 is a side view of a fragmentary part of my device.
Fig. 6 is an end view of my device.
Fig. 7 is a side view of part of my device.
Fig. 8 is a front view of part of my device.
The same reference characters denote like parts in each of the several figures of the drawings.
In the construction of my device, I provide a handle A, straight in the present case but which could be curved in a modified form of my device; said handle having a curved head 13, disk shaped and having slidably rotating therein the disk C. The disk C may be provided with two or more slots Y which extend inwardly from its periphery and terminate in large recesses Y for the reception of wires to be twisted. The disk C has also in the face thereof, a groove or channel Q. Mounted in the handle head B, I have a series of set screws 3. 3. 3, theinner ends of which enter said channel or groove 2 of the disk C, in its position within the head and acting as or forming guides to hold the disk 0 in position within the handle A, in its rotating movements; the channel forms parallel edges in the side walls of the disk C and in the parallel edges of the side walls of disk C, I have a series of notches or recesses 4i. i. a, adapted to receive pawl 21, mounted within the handle it, supported by the coil spring 5 and slidably mounted within, the hollow handle recess 6 and hav 'ing the tooth head? adapted to enter the recess 4 in the disk C. The outer sides 8. 8 of the pawl Z thus mounted, project beyond the outer side surface of the handle A so as to be capable of manipulating by means of thumb and finger of hand in the operation of the device, thus freeing the rotating disk when desired. In the lower end of the handle A, I have the receiving recess 9, with the curved sides 9. 9, forming a semicircular or tubular opening, projecting at its base into the curved side recesses 10, 10, which recess 9 with its curved opening 9. 9 is for receiving the adjacent twisted wires and removably holding the same during the twisting operation, illustrated in Fig. 3. It will be thus readily seen that in my device the head B is used most effectively in reaching in narrow places and grasping the opposite strands of wires 11. 11, stretched across interior spaces and recesses as between the walls of a form used in concrete structures, as shown in Fig. 4; while the lower end of handle A is readily adapted to grasp and twist the projecting ends of wires 11. 11 protruding from the side walls or outer surface of a structure or frame, as shown in Fig. 3. In the operation of my device as applied to forms or frames used in concrete work and the stud supports 12. 12 mounted therein the wire strands 11. 11 being shaped around the studding 12. 12, leaves the projecting ends 13. 13 extending outward to which I apply the lower end of handle A, with its recess 9, and curved opening 9. 9 receiving the ends 13. 13 and by turning the handle A, the wire ends 13. 13 can be thoroly and completely twisted to a firm union. To tighten and twist the opposite horizontal strands 11. 11 within the form or structure, as shown in Fig. 4, I place the strands 11. 11 within the slots Y. Y So as to be firmly held therein, contacting and entering the side recess- Y. Y, I then turn the handle A about the disk, thus held in contact with the strands ll. 11 and the pawl Z, with its tooth 7, carried by the handle, sliding by the notches 4. l, on the surface of the disk C, until the handle has reached an extremeposition and then by reversing the handle movement, the pawl Z with tooth 7, contacts with a notch 4- and turning the disk C, turns with it the wires 11. 11 in a twisting movement, twisting the wires 11. 11 together.
I again repeat the handle movement in this position until the wires 11. 11 are securely twisted to any extent desired. The mechanism in the head of the handle enables my device to be operated when it can be applied most readily in a Vertical position and within an inclosure limiting the extent of movement, while the base end of handle A, enables the handle to grasp the outer ends of wires in a horizontal position.
Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim as new and for which ters Patent, is as follows: 7
A wire twisting tool comprising a handle terminating at one end in a bifurcation, the

arms of the bifurcation being arcuate in" on' the handle for engagement with the notches, and a plurality of set screws en.- tering the perforations of the bifurcation and engaging the channel in the disk for rotatably retaining the disk in position in the bifurcation.
In testimony signature.
HARVEY B. SHREOKENGAST.
