C. M G. SYKES POISE WEIGHT 0F STEELYARDS Filed May 6, 1922.
Patented Oct. 7, 1924.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CAMERON MoG-REGOR SYKES, OF BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR TO W. & T. AVERY, LIMITED, OF BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND.
POISE-WEIGHT OF STEELYARDS.
Application filed May 6,
1 0 all whom it may camera:
Be it known that CAMERON MoGnncon Srnns, a subject of the King of Great Britain residing at Soho Foundry, Birmingham, England, has invented a new and useful Improvement Connected *ith the P iser \Veights of Steelyards; and he does hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
This invention has reference to improvements connected with the poise weights of steelyards and has for its object to improve the loading of the poise weight so as to alter the effective weight thereof in order to obtain the correct balance of the weighing apparatus or the like in connection with which it is employed, the invention residing more particularly in the location or disposition of the loading chamber and in the shape of the compartments therein which receive and contain the loading material.
The present invention comprises a poise weight for steelyards wherein the loading chamber of the poise weight is disposed equally on either side of a vertical line passing through the fulcrum knife edge of the steelyard; the invention further resides in the construction of the loading chamber, more particularly in the shape of the compartments therein and the means of attachment of the loading chamber to the poise weight.
The preferred means of carrying the present invention into effect will now be de scribed in conjunction with the accompanying sheet of drawings which illustrate one embodiment thereof. In the drawings Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the improved construction of poise weight mounted upon a steelyard.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the loading chamber removed from the poise weight, and
Fig. 3 is a section taken on Fig. 1.
The present invention is applied to a poise weight 4 whichis mounted upon a steelyard 5 and is provided with the ordinary runners or rollers 6 together with a handle 7 for traversing the poise weight along the steelyard, and a nib 8 for locating the poise weight in the notches 9 of the steelyard 5.
line 3 3 of 1922 Serial No. 558,990.
her 13 which is a separable member (see Fig. 2) disposed on the underside of the bottom or tail section. of the poise weight l This loading chamber is arranged equally on either side of a vertical line which passes through the fulcrum knifeedge 14 of the steelyard 5 on which the poise weight is mounted when the poise weight is in. its zero position on the steelyard. The loading chamber 13 is mainly disposed with in a recess 15 formed in the bottom or tail section 4* of the poise weight and is secured in position by means of a screw 16. The loading chamber takes the form of a base plate 17 on which is formed two loading compartments 18 each of a- V shape so that the molten lead 19 (or lead shot) which is placed in these compartments for the purpose of loading the poise weight at to its correct weight automatically positions itself within the V slots or compartments 18. The flange of the base plate 17 forms a positioning means for the loading chamber 13 relat've to the underface of the poise weight as clearly seen in Fig. 3. l
The particular feature of the present invention resides in the disposition of the aforesaid loading chamber 13 and in the fact that its construction is such that the balance of the steelyard 5 is not affected if any change is made in the loading thereof with a consequent reduction of labour and saving of time when testing or rebalancing the weighing apparatus.
Claims 1. In a traversable poise weight for steelyards, a loading chamber disposed equally on either side of a vertical plane including the fulcrum knife of the steelyard on which the poise weight is mounted when the said poise weight is in its zero position.
2. In a travcrsable poise weight for steelshaped compartment or compartments for automatically determining the position oi the loading material placed therein.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
CAMERON MCGREGOR SYKES.
