SPRING-BALANCE SCALE-PAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 351,274, dated October 19, 1886.
Application filed October 30, 1885.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES It. llliicninn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in SpringBala-nce Scale-Pans, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in scalepans for spring-balances of that class which have dials, pointers, and hanging pans. The scale-pans of this description of scales are made of various materials, including wood, marble, and other material capable of absorbing grease, and from this cause it happens that a spring-balance which may have been accurately adjusted for the scale-pan when new will after the pan has become heavier by the absorption of grease (as they do when used by butchers and butter-dealers) show by the pointer to be out of adjustment.
The object of this invention, therefore, is to provide for the pansof this class of springbalanees a removable receptacle or pocket to contain lead, whereby upon changing thelead the balance may be regulated so as to show on the dial a proper position for the pointer without any change or removalof the pointer.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a View of a scale-pan such as is employed with a springbalance. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the scalepan, showing the detachable receptacle. The particular scale-pan A and hanger 13 here shown are like that shown and described in Letters Patent of the United States, granted March 25,1884, No. 295,785. It is needless, therefore, to fully describe these parts here.

Pieces of. lead f are placed in the receptacle, and the open side of the latter is placed against the bottom surface of the scalepan, and screws {1 are then passed from the top side of the scale-pan through to and into the screw-holes e of the receptacle. ,By constructing thelead-receptacle in this mannerthat is, having all its sides but one closed and providing it with screw-holes and placing the one open side in contact with the scale-pan bottom and securing it thereto by screws-it may be readily attached to scale-pans al ready in use and as readily removed there from. It will thus be seen it is perfectly adapted for the accomplishment of the object in View.
It has been stated the receptacle may be made of metal; but it also maybe made of other niaterialsuch as wood and vulcanized rubberand the shape of it may vary from that shown in the drawings. It may also be attached by screws passed first through the holes of the receptacle and then into the bottom side of the scalepan.
Scales or balances have heretofore had shotreceptacles attached to their pans for the purpose of putting the pan and scale in balance. I do not, therefore, claim such a device, broadly.
Having described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States The combination, with a spring-balance having a dial, pointer, and hangiim scale-pan, A, of a-receptacle, 0, closed on all sides but one, and having the one open side in contact with the scale-pan and secured thereto, substantially as described, whereby to permit of the ready attachment or removal of the receptacle, for the purpose set forth.
