LAMP HOLDER FOR CAPS.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE S. CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portsmouth, in the county of Sciorto and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lamp Holders for Caps,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to supports and has for'its object the provision of a novel device designed to be. mounted upon the cap of a miner or the like for the purpose of holding a lamp whereby the lamp will be supported 7 properly and be prevented from shaking loose.
It is well known that workers in mines and in under ground passages, tunnels and other places must carry with them lights in order that they may see to carry on their work and it is also necessary that they have their hands free to use their tools.
The common method is to provide a small acetylene or other lamp which is mounted upon the cap and the uestion then arises as to how the lamp shoul be supported from the cap in. order that it will be secure and etlicient.
It is with the above facts in View that l have designed the present device-which is intended to be carried permanently upon a cap and which is so constructed that the ordinary type of lamp may be quickly and easily engaged therewith or disengaged therefrom while at the same time it will be held steady and firmly when in use.
An additional object is the provision of a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, highly efficient in use, durable in service and a general improvement in the art.

Referring more particularly to the drawings the letter A designates a cap of that type worn by miners or others having occasion to work in underground or dark places which cap is generally provided with Serial No. 647,139.

In carrying out my invention I provide an attachment which includes an elongated sheet 10 of fiber or other suitable material which is disposed against the front of the cap and which is secured at its lower end onto the top of the visor B by means of rivets 11 or the like. Secured, as by rivets 12 to the front of the upper end of this sheet is an angularly shaped metallic bracket 13 which is right angular in cross section and which is so formed as to define a horizontal top portion 14 which overlies and is riveted to the top of the cap as indicated at 15. The location of this device is such that the sheet 10 will be spaced somewhat from the front of the cap to provide an air space which will prevent over heating of the cap when the lamp is in operation. The bracket 13 is formed with a head 16 which is located forwardly of the sheet 10 and which bead is cut or slotted as shown at 17 for a purpose to be described. At the point somewhat to the rear of the sheet 10 the top member 14 of the bracket is formed with a hole 18 located directly to the rear of the slot- 17.
Secured upon the rear side of the sheet is a comparatively narrow but elongated strip 19 of metal which serves to stiffen the fiber sheet and which has its upper end formed with a hook 20 which constitutes attaching means for one end of a tension spring 21 which has its other end connected with the depending end 22 of a rod 23 which is slidable through the bead l6 and which normally extends across the slot 17 therein.
The letter C designates an acetylene lamp of that type commonly used by miners and others and, as is well known, such a lamp is provided at its rear with a hook D and also with a horizontally extending double ended clip E. In making my device I use a sheet 10 of such width that it will be properly received within the double ended clip E and the hole 18 and slot 17 are so spaced as to be capable of receiving the hook D.
In installing my device, the fiber sheet and bracket 13 are secured to the cap as above described and as illustrated. In order to apply the lamp, the operator must grasp the depending angular end 22 and move it away from the bracket 13 so that the rod 23 will be out of obstructing relation to the slot 17 While the rod is held in this position, the operator engages the hook D of the lamp, by a downward moedges of the sheet 10 and will operate to hold the lamp against lateral shaking or displacement.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
1. Means for holding upon a cap alamp of that type provided at its rear with a hook and with a horizontally extending double ended clip, comprising an elongated sheet 1 of material located at the front of a cap and secured at its lower end thereto, an an gular metallic bracket at the upper end of said sheet and in turn secured to the top of the cap, the angle of said bracket being formed with a hollow bead slotted transversel-y at its center, the bracket being furthermore provided at its, top with a hole located rearwardly of said slot, the edges of the elongated sheet being 'frictiona'lly engaged "by said double ended clip and said hole and slot being adapted to receive the hook on the "lamp, and a spring pressed latch slidable within said bead and normally extending across said slot above the hodk for preventing upward 'dlsplacement thereof,
an elongated metallic strip secured upon the rear of said sheet to serve as a stiffener therefor, the upper end of said strip being formed as a hook to which the spring of the latch is connected.
2. Means for holding upon a cap a lamp of that type provided at its rear with a hook and with a horizontally extending double ended clip, comprising an elongated sheet of material located at the front of a cap and secured at its lower end thereto, an angular metallic bracket at the upper end of said sheet and in turn secured to, the top of the cap, the angle of said bracket being formed with a hollow 'bead slotted trans versely at its center, the bracket being furthermore provided at its top with a hole located rearwardly of said slot, the edges of the elongated sheet being frictionally-engagedby said double ended clip and said hole and slot being adapted to receive the hook on the lamp, and a spring pressed latch slidable within said bead and normally extending across said slot above the hook for preventing upward displacement thereof, the latch consisting of a rod like member slidable through the bead and having its outer end projecting rearwardly "and formed with an angular downward extension constituting a handle, and a spring having one'end secured to said downturned end and its other end secured at the back of the sheet-J In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
