UNITED STATES WAYNE A. WARD, 0F EVANS MILLS, .NEW YORK.
ROBE HOLDER FOR- AUTOMOBILES.
Application filed April 9,1924. Serial No. 705,354.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVAYNE A. VVano, a citizen of the United States, residing at Evans Mills, in the county of Jefferson and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Robe Holders for Automobiles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to accessories for use in connection with automobiles-and has for its object the provision of a novel device for holding a la robe, blanket or the like securely upon an over the hood and radiator of an automobile whereby to prevent freezing thereof.
An important object is the provision of a device 0 this character which is so constructed that it may be engaged over the hood or to extend in front of the radiator for holding the lap robe, blanket or equivalent, the device being moreover adjustable and equipped with tension means for holding it taut.
An additional object is the provision of a device for this purpose which will be simple and inexpensive to manufacture, easy to install, positive in its holding action, eflicient and durable in service and a general improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of an automobile, the forward wheel being omitted, this view illustrating the invention in applied position,
Figure 2 is a detail section through one of the devices,
Figure 3 is an enlarged detail view of the adjusting means.
Referring more particularly to the drawings the letter A designates the hood of an automobile, and B the radiator, both of which elements it is desired to cover with a lap robe or blanket indicated at C. It is a common practice simply to throw a lap robe over the hood and radiator, but the great disadvantage is that in the absence of any holding means the robe is frequently blown off so that there is nothing to protect the motor and radiator against cold so that freezing results.
In car ing out my invent-ionI provide a holding evice which includes a flexible member 10 which may be formed of rope or spring which is located within the barrel in encircling relation to the rod and in abut ting engagement to the cap 13. This cap is preferably screwed onto the barrel so as to facilitate assembling of the parts or disassembling in case it is necessary to replace a broken spring or make any ot er repairs.
Carried by and preferably swiveled upon the closed end of the barrel is a hook 17 which is likewise adapted for engagement with the hood handle or hood clip as the case may be.
In order to provide for adjustment in the length of the flexible member 10, I form the projectin end of the rod 14 with a double loop or gure 8 portion designed broadly by the numeral 18. Quite naturally this figure 8 or double loop need not be formed integrally by bending the rod as shown in Figure 3, inasmuch as it is apparent that it could be formed as a separate member attached to the rod if preferred. The flexible member 10 is threaded through the two loops 19 and 20 and has its end brought between the double loop at the center thereof and the overlying portion of the flexible member so as to frictionally hold the flexible member in adjusted position.
In Figure l I have illustrated a lap robe or blanket G held in position by two of my devices, one extending over the hood with its end connected with the hood handles D, and the other extending horizontally and passing about the front of the radiator at the lower portion thereof, the terminal hooks bein likewise engaged with the hood handles. here is however no limitation as to the exact location or the nature of the holding means to which'the hooks are connected.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it is apparent that I have thus provided a very simple device for the purpose specified, which is, moreover, very quickly and easily applied and which will prevent blowing oil of the cover, whatever the cover may be. a
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention it is. of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims,
I claim:'
1. Means for holding a protective covering upon thehood and radiator of an automobile, comprising a flexible member provided at one end with means for anchoring atone side of the hood, a barrel, a spring pressed rod slidably mounted within the barrel, means on thebarrel for anchoring at the other side'ot the hood, and an adjustable connection between the rod and flexible member, the device being disposable selectively to extend across the hood or across'the radiator at thelower portion thereof.
QQlVIean forholding, a protective covering upon the hood and radiator of an automobile, comprising a flexible member provided at one end with means for anchoring at one side ot the hood, a barrel, a spring pressed rod slidablymounted within the barrel, means on the barrel for anchoring atthe other side of the hood, and an adjustable connection between the rod and flexible member, the adjusting means comprising a double loop through which theflexiblc member is threaded with the free end engaged betweenthecenter or junctureot the two loops and the overlying portion of the flexible member.
3. A device of the character described comprising a flexible member equipped at one end with a hook, a barrel equipped with a hook, a cap on the barrel, a rod slidable.
through the cap and carrying a disk with in the barrel, a springsurrounding the rod within the barrel and abutting against the cap and the disk, and means for adjustably connecting the. flexible member with the projecting end ofsaid rod.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
