Description

Nov. 18, 1924. 1,516,307-
E. E. REUTER LAMP HOLDER Filed March 6, 1924- fill] INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Nov. 18, 1924.
UNITED STATES ERNEST EMIL REUTER, OF STAUNTON, ILLINOIS.
LAMP HOLDER.
Application filed March 6, 1924.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNns'r E. REUTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Staunton, in the county of Macoupin and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lamp Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my said invention is the provision of a. holder adapted to detachably secure a carbide lamp on a miners cap in such manner as to preclude shaking or casual displacement of the lamp during the working operations of a miner, the said holder being also adapted to be expeditiously and easily fixed on and removed from a miners cap.
To the attainment of the foregoing the invention consists in the means as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification Figure 1 is an elevation of one side of my improvement in use.
Figure 2 is an elevation of the opposite side of the improvement.
Figure 3 is a horizontal section taken on the plane indicated by the line 33 of Figure 1.
Figures 4 and 5 are enlarged details hereinafter explicitly referred to.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
The cap 1 with the peak 2 and the plate 3 fixed to the peak 2 and the crown of the cap may be and preferably are of the ordinary well known construction as is also the carbide or acetylene gas lamp 4.
My invention resides in the holder for clamping and retaining in fixed relation the lamp 4 and for effecting connection of the said lamp to the cap. Among other elements the holder comprises a base plate 5 hooked at one end as designated by 6 to engage one side edge of the plate 3. The holder also comprises an expansible and contractible ring 7 riveted or otherwise fixed at 8 to the base plate 5 and disposed in front of the same. At 9 a brace is interposed between and fixed to the plate 5 and the ring 7. One end of the base plate 5 is slotted at 10 to receive a screw shank 11/ The said shank 11 is fixed at its rear end to a clip 12, and on its forward portion and in front of the plate 5 the shank 11 is provided with a binding nut 13. The shank 11 is Serial No. 697,313.
slidable in the slot 10 for the engagement of the clip 12 with one edge of the plate 3, and manifestly when the clip 12 is properly positioned and the edges of the plate 3 are seated in the hook 6 and the clip 12, respectively, and the nut 13 is tightened against the face of the base plate 5, the said base plate 5 and the holder as a whole will be securely and fixedly though detachably connected to the cap plate 3; it being understood in this connection that all that is necessary for the detachment of the holder from the cap is to loosen the nut 13 and then manipulate the clip 12 and the base plate 5 for the disengagement of the same from the cap plate 8.
The ring 7 is essentially of spring metal and it is of contractible capacity, one of its ends being looped over the other and provided with a slot 14. The said slot 14 is for the reception and passage of a screw shank 15, and mounted on the said shank 15 and arranged exteriorly of the slotted end of the ring 7 is a binding nut 16.
It will be readily apparent from the foregoing that my novel holder is susceptible of being readily fixed by the means described to the cap plate 3, and it will also be apparent that when the lamp 4 is arranged in the ring 7 and the said ring is contracted to tightly embrace the lamp, and the nut 16 is turned inwardly to retain the ring in its contracted state, the ring will hold the lamp so tightly that there is no liability of the lamp shaking and no liability of the lamp being displaced when a miner stoops or when he otherwise moves his head incident to the operation of mining.
Notwithstanding the practical advantages ascribed to my novel holder it will be read ily appreciated that the holder is simple and inexpensive in construction and light in weight and is well adapted to withstand the usage to which devices of corresponding character are ordinarily subjected.
The construction illustrated and described constitutes the preferred embodiment of my invention, but I would have it understood that in the future practice of the invention such changes or modifications may be made as fairly fall within the scope of my invention as defined in my appended claim.
Having described my invention what I claim is A lamp holder for use on miners caps comprising a base plate having a hook at one end and a longitudinal slot in its opposite end, a clip disposed at the rear or inner side of said base plate, a screw shank carried by said clip and extending through and adjustable in said slot, a binding nut mounted on said shank and disposed in front of said base plate, a contractible ring affixed to the base plate and disposed in front of the 5211116 and having looped end portions, one of which is longitudinally slotted,
a screw shank carried by the other end portion and extending through said slot, and a. binding nut mounted on said screw shank and disposed at the outer side of and adapted to beset against the slotted end portion of the ring.
In testimony whereof I affix my signaiu re ERNEST EMIL REUTER.
