Description
R. BUSTIN.
`Papier-Hanging Machines. 4No.l5l,086. Patented May19,1874.
Way-2 izwawmv 4 UNITED STATES PATENT @einenL ROBERT BUSTIN, OF ST. JOHN, CANADA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PAPERHANGING MACHINES.
Speciiication formingpart of Letters Patent No. 15LOS6, dated Mey 19, 1874; application iiled April 1, 1814.
' the journals of the shaft receiving the roll of paper in movable bisected boxes, which are combined with set-screws, so as to enable the pressure of the boxes upon the journals to be increased or lessened, for varying the speed of the rotation of the roll of paper and the passage of the same through the apparatus. rlhe invention further consists in the arrangement, in proper respect to the pasting-roller, of doctorplates77 or scrapers, which are attached to adjustable arms or rods, and bear against the periphery of the pasting-roller with a greater or less pressure, for preventing the same from spreading an excessive amount of paste upon the paper.
In the accompanying` drawing, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a transverse section of a paper pasting and hanging apparatus constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is an end view of thepaste-box, showing the adjustable boxes `of the paperroller.
The case or box A may be of wood or other suitable light material, and within the same I place a metallic or earthenware paste-re ceptacle, B, which is of such a height and size as not to extend quite up to the journals of the pasting-roller C. The gudgeons or journals of said pasting -roller are inserted into slotted bearings in the side walls of the box A, so as to enable the roller to yield to such an extent as will enable the same to conform to the inequalities of paper, the consistency of the paste, and other causes.
If deemed desirable, springs may be placed -to bear upon the upper movable section of the journal-box, in order to vary the pressure upon the shaft D, for changing the speed of rotation of the roll of paper and the passage of the latter over thepasting devices. A guide or pressure roller, Gr, is located at the opposite side of the pastingsroller, which is located on the same level as the paper roll or shaft.
The operation of pasting and hanging the paper is accomplished by drawing on the pa per, in itting the same to the wall, until a piece the full length of the wall has been pasted to the latter, when it is cut ott' for re peating the operation.
During the passage of the paper over the pasting-roller the requisite pressure and guid; ance of the same is eifected by the peculiar arrangement of the rollers or shafts, and thus a duplication of pressure-rollers is rendered unnecessary.
In order to prevent an excessive amount of paste from being applied to the paper, I ar: range, in proper relation to the pasting-roller, doctor plates or Scrapers H, which bear against the periphery of the roller, and are attached to arms or rods I, projecting' through the walls of the box A, and provided with screw-threaded ends and nuts f, for adjusting the doctors in respect to the pasting=roller.
The paper to be applied to the wall is wound on the shaft by means of a h andcrauk and spur-gearing a b c but, if found expedient, an entire roll of paper can be fitted in posii tion on the roller D, for unwindin g the paper directly from the same.
Then not in use or during transportation,
the entire operative mechanism of the appzi- 2. In combination 'with the pasting-roller rctus is protected and concealed from View by and paste-box, the adjustable doctors or scrapa cover, K, applied to the case or box, which ers H, arranged as shown, and for the pnrpose is conned in place in the present instance by described.
a hook and an eye, d e. In testimony that I claim the foregoing I Having thus fully described my invention, have hereunto set my hand this 1st day of what I claim is- April, 1874.-
l. In combination with the paste-box, past- ROBT. BUSTIN'. in g-roller, and paper-receiving shaft, the ad- Witnesses: justable bearings or boxes for the latter, sub- W. J. PEYTON, stantially as described. Y A. H. NoRRIs.
