IMPROVEMENT IN BED- BOTTOMS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No 151,062, dated May 19, 1874; application filed January 24, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JONATHAN V. TAYLOR, of La Oygnc, in the county of Linn and State of Kansas, have invented a new and Improved Bed-Bottom 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification.

This invention has for its object to furnish. a flexible bed-bottom which can be maintained in a proper state of tension through the medium of simple and eifective devices. The invention consists in attaching longitudinal strips of webbing, canvas, or cords to head and foot frames, composed of transverse bars connected by longitudinal arms, the end bars of said frames being provided with projecting gudgeons or journals, which are fitted in inclined grooves, or in rear of inclined cleats on the side rails of the bedstead, so that when the bed-bottom is depressed, by pressure applied to the end frames, the latter will turn or oscillate for causing the same to bear against the under side of the flexible bed-bottom, which will cause the central portion of the latter to be elevated, for obtaining a taut or properly-stretched surface.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of my bed-bottom, taken. on the line 0 c of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a similar detached view, representing the bottom when cords are used.

The letter A designates an entire bed-bottom, constructed according to my invention, when applied to an ordinary bedstead. The

bottom proper is composed of a series of longitudinal strips or bands, 0, and a transverse strip, 1), of webbing, canvas, or tin, or cords may be resorted to, as shown in Fi 3. The

strips are attached to frames B B, which are located, respectively, at the head and foot of the bedstead, and composed of the transverse bars 1) F and the connecting-arms E E. The extremities of the bars D are provided with projecting gudgeons or journals a, which are inserted into grooves or gains, or in rear of cleats G on the side rails G of the bedstead. Said grooves or cleats are inclined or set in a slanting direction, as shown in 1, so that when the bed-bottom is depressed by a downward pressure applied to the end frames before the bed is used, or by causing the weight of the occupant of the bed to be concentrated at the end of the bed-bottom, the end frames will be moved, to a slight extent, in a longi tudinal direction, for tightening or stretching the strips (J attached to said frames. The gudgeons a of the bars I) are made of a convex or oval shape in cross-section, so that when the frames are depressed said gudgeons will oscillate or turn to such an extent as will cause the opposite end of the frame or the bar F to be elevated, and to bear against the under side of the bed-bottom, for causing the central portion of the same to be raised or elevated, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is A bedbottom composed of the end frames B B and flexible straps or strips 0, the bars D of said frames being provided with proj ecting gudgeons a, shaped as described. in combination with the inclined seats G ofthe side rails of the bedstead, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
