Description
Patented Get, 7, 1924,
negarea PILESAIQE S. TOERENCE, OF SALISIBUEY, NDETH GAROLINA limitari semene,
water breaks and troughs to avoid all possi- Y bility of water seeping through the oints.
With the foregoing and other Objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made with-` in the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings:-
Figure 1 represents a transverse section taken on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2 showing the improved means for preventing leakage at the lioint.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of a portion of the plurality of shingles connected by this improved joint, and
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view thereof.
In the embodiment illustrated. two sheet metal shingles 1 are shown having their adiacent side edges connected by a joint 15. The shingle 1 has a nailing flange 2 and at the rear of this flange between it and. the body portion of the shingle are twov laterally spaced troughs 3 and 4.- extending at obtuse angles to each other with a head 5 formed at the vertex thereof to provide a water break. Another bead 6 is formed at the upper end of trough 3 by folding` the sheet metal longitudinally at this point the inner Wall of said fold being in the form of a compound curve in cross section the bulged portion 6a of which forms one member of a lock to be presently more fully described. The trough 3 is designed to form a pocket to receive the edge 11 of an adiacent shingle. the mouth of said pocket being contracted and the outer faceof theedge 11 being designed to contact with the bulge nu of bead 6. forming a tight joint. At the base of this flange 11 is formed a bead 12 which fits up Application filed March 12, 1923. Serial No, 624,633.
isiafiizi over the head or water break located he- H tween the upper edge of the trongh 4 and the nailling fiange 2 forming a water tight joint at this point. The break 7l is considerably higher than hreak so that all danger of the water overflowing` break 7 isprevented. By this arrangement when the' flange 11 is inserted in the' pocket 3 its edge terminates short of the bottom of the pocket and its outer face bears against the inner face of the bead bulge (Sa forming a substantially water-tight jointV bnt should any water leak past this joint and enter the pocket 3, it will k: fiow down through said trough-like pocket and be discharged onto the next shingle below. Should a sufficient amount of water enter the pocket 3 to overflow7 it will enter the trough 4 which is suiiiciently large and deep to conduct the water without-obstruction and discharge it onto the shing'le below preventing all possibility of the water passing the bea'd 7 and seeping through onto the roof below. f
From the above description itA will be seen that a joint constructed as herein shown and described will prevent all possibility of leakage and will freely carry off any water which may enter it.
Various changes in the form, shape, proportionand other minor details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the claimed invention.
I claim V 1. The combination of two adiacent shingles one having a nailing flange and a plnrality of longitudinally vextending troughs with a water break between them and one at the Outer edge of the outer trough. the Outer break being higher than the inner, the other shingle closely contacting with the nailing flange and the outer water break of the first mentioned shingle and having a flange to enter one of said troughs and interlockingly engage the outer wall thereof, said wall having a bulge near its outer edge to engage said flange and form a tight joint between them the edgfe of said fiange terminating short of the bottom of the trough.
v2. A joint for metal shingles comprising a shingle having a nailing flange and a pair of oppositely extending obliquely disposed tronghs with heads at the outer upner edges thereof and. one between them, the intermediate head being lower. than the others` and another shingle having a flange adapted to enter one of said tronghs to form cosurethereforq said last mentioned shinple overlyng and tightly fittng the mailing; fiange of the trough Carryng shingle ami having a hollow bead at the base of its flange to tghtly fit over the ontermost Water break of the first mentoned shngle.
The combnation of a pair of metal shinges, one having a naihngfiange along its side edgeand provided n rear of raid fiange with a pair of longtudinafljf extenb ing tronghs With a Water break arranged hetWeen them, said troughs having overhang'ng loop-like heads at their Outer edg'es forming a. looking member and a Water break respec- 'tvehye said. bead beinfr of heght greater than said ntermedate Water break; the other ehngle having a fiange to enter one of said troug'hs and nterlookngly engage said lookng' member, said fiange having an outward bulge to fit over and tightly engage the outer Water break and the nailng fiange of the other shngle.
In testmony that 14 claim the 'foregong as my own, I have hereto aflxed my signature n the presenoe of two Wtnessee.
FIE-SANT S. TORRENCE.
