JEROME B. BEHREND, AND CLAUDE COLLER, COMPCSIN G THE FIRM OF BEE TREND ROTHSCHILD, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
ELASTIC DOLL.
Application July 30, 1923. Serial-No. 654,591.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. LEE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Brooklyn, Kings County, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Elastic Dolls, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to toy figures, such as dolls or the like and in particular to the inflatable rubber type.
A particular object of the invention is to provide a doll, the body, arms and legs of which shall be made of heavier or thicker rubber than the head portion so that the latter may expand more rapidly and entirely out of proportion to the expansion of the former,
A further object is to provide a figure of this character in which a double sound will be made when the body of the doll is squeezed and released, and also the head portion will become enlarged when the body portion is squeezed.
Referring to the drawings wherein I have shown one embodiment of my invention in the form of a toy figure;
Figure l is a face. view of the doll showing the same after inflation, the relative size of head and body being illustrated; and;
Figure'2 is a partial section taken through the doll while inflated showing the check valve and sound producing device which forms the neck of the figure.
Referring to the drawing in detail, 5 indicates the inflatable body portion, having inflatable arms 5 and inflatable legs 5",
and 6 the head portion of a doll figure con-.
structed in accordance with my invention. The head portion 6 it will be noticed is made of a thinner rubber than the body portion 5 and is closed at the neck 7 by the insertion therein of a cylindrical block 8 around the center of the periphery of which is formed a groove 12 in which the edge of the neck portions of the head is held This block 8, which may be of wood, is provided with a bore 9 over the ends of which are disposed the metallic reed-like lips 10 which are fastened to the block in any suitable manner so that the loose ends ASSIGNOR T0 JOSEPH n. nornsdmnn,
thereof which overlie the bore 9 will vibrate when air passes through the bore and cause a sound to be emitted. This occurs when the body is squeezed and then released, because the head material is thinner and the air is forced through the bore and causes vibrations of the lips 10 as well as enlargement of the head of the figure.
In order to hold the fi ure inflated I provide in the head thereo? a check valve 11, which allows the air to be blown into the figure and prevents its escape therefrom; the same being of any well known type which may be opened to cause deflation.
The body portion 5 is provided at its upper edge with a heavy integral rubber ring 1% which fits into the groove 12 and keeps the parts of the figure together and'-., "provides an air-tight connectioini for the amusement of children, a crying or other similar sound.
It is to be understood that the form of figure may be varied to animals, fish or the like and that any reed arrangement may be supplied to produce a multiplicity of different sounds.
Having described my invention what I claim therefore is z- An inflatable toy comprising a head and a body portion, the body having inflatable arm and leg portions, the head being made of relatively thinner material whereby it will expand more rapidly than said arm and leg portions, a check valve in the head portion, a block between said head and body portions having a peripheral groove and a passage-way therethrough, a vibratory element at each end of said passage-way whereblock.
