To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK B. DmLAnD, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Y tion.
Oakland, in' the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Toilet- Seats, of which the following isa specifica- Thisinvention relates to improvements in adjustable toilet seats.
The principalobject of this invention is to construct a toilet seat which may be easily and rapidly adjusted to provide for the accommodation of various individuals.
Another object of this invention is-to provide a device of this character which is apart of this specification,.an
cheap to construct, neat in appearance and one which may be employed w1th theusualtoilet b se. Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description. v p
In the accompanying drawin s forming in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a top plan'view of my device,
Figure 2 is a cross-section taken on the line 22 ofFigure 1, and
Figure 3 is an enlarged detail cross-sew 1 tion taken on the line 33 of Figure 2..
It is now customary, to employ auxiliary toilet seats for children, which seats are superimposed upon the ordinary seat; or to use a separatechair having a receptacle therein. Both of these methods are troublesome, and the use of a separate receptacle is unsanitary as these receptacles are often upset and broken. In. travelingor in thea tres and the like, accommodations for 'chil dren are not provided, and it is to provide for their convenience that I have devlsed my invention, which consists of expansible seat ortions which may be moved to or away roin each other, thus providing an expansible toiletseat for individuals of all ages.
In the accompanyingdrawmgs, wherein for the urpose offillustration is shown a preferre embodiment ofmy invention, the numerals 5 and 6refer to two' seat-portions of a toilet seat, which rest on the usual bowl 23. These-seat portions are curved and are secured to a cross piece 7 throu h the medium of channelsjg and 9, whic engiaqg: T members'as shown at Hand 12. T
members are secured to .the'crosspidce 7,
while 'the channels are secured to each. of
the seat pieces 5 and 6. A'recess 13 is prov1d ed on each of the seat pieces, within which recess is mounted a nut 14. This nut 14 is adapted to engage a worm 16, and it W111 be noted, by viewing Figure 2, that this worm 161s formed upon the shaft 17 and-is gitched in opposite directions from its me- I ial line toward each 'end. A handle as shown at 18 and 19 is-secured to each end of the shaft 17 for the urpose of rotating the same. Suitable bearings. 21 and 22 are "sevent lateral movement of the shaft 17. .The numeral 23 designatestlie usual porcelain bowl of the toilet to whiish is secured secured to the seat portions 5 and 6 'will be caused tomove to or away from each other depending u on the direction 'of' rotation ofthe s aft 17, thereby adjusting the distance between the seat portions for the accommodation of the person using the toilet. I 1
It isa arent that I have devised a very simfile, e cient and quick means for accomplis ing the above result, and one which may be applied to the standard porcelain bowl now in general use.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a same,'and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts me be resorted to without departing from-t e spiritjoined claims.
Having thus claim':- i
- 1. In a device of the character described, a cross piece, a shaft mounted on said cross piece, worms formed on said shaft, and substantlally semi-circular seat portions shd-ably to said cross pieces and adapted to be simultaneously moved tow d or away cured to the cross piece 7 and serve to pref 'a pintle 24 to which the cove126 is hingedi the result will be that the nuts 14, which are a a I preferred example of the described :my "invention, I I
