Unirse stares ATENT OFFICE.
WALTER N. VANCE, OF CHICAG HEXGHTS, LLLNOIS, ASSIGNOR TO DURAND STEEL LOCKER COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A. CORORATION OE' ILLINOIS.
CHECKHOOK.
Application led October 14, 1920. Serial No. 416,994.
T0 all whom z'z may concern:
Be it known that l, WALTER N. VANGE, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago Heights, in the county of Cook and State of illinois, have invented a new and useful improvement in Check Hooks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates in general to hooks for identification checks and the like, and has more particular reference to articles of that character made of bendable material so shaped that the body portions thereof may be sprung into a flanged holder regularly used for labels and the like.
1t is a common practice in factories and shops to provide for each employ a quan tity of brass checks bearing a number assigned to him and to place one of-such checks in some manner upon any bin from which a tool is issued to him. Various types of hooks have been used for this purpose, most of them having threaded shanks or other difficult and inflexible means of attachment. lt is a principal object of my invention to provide a simplified, ineXpensive and practical hook which may be positioned in an ordinary label holder or removed therefrom at will, thereby furnishing a flexible arrangement for the purpose stated. l Y
A further object of the invention is the provision of a check hook of the general type described, which is made of bendable material and is so bent as to form a body portion having free ends, permitting` it to be readily sprung into a holder having re taining flanges, which will then overlap parts of said body portion.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a check hook of this type, having a fiat body portion which may be placed within a label holder, either in front of or behind the label.
A still further object of theinvention is the provision of a check hook, made of a single piece lof material, and having a strengthened prong, formed by bending the central portion of said piece of material over upon itself and then bending the resultant doubled part outwardly so that the prong will extend upwardly at an angle from the bottom of a body portion.`
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description when considered in connection with the ac companying drawings illustrating a preferred embodiment thereof.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective of a bin front, showing a label holder attached and the check hook in place;
Fig. Qis a top view of the same;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken online 3 3 in Fig. 1;
Fig. l is an elevation of a label holder; and
Fig. 5 is an elevation of a check hook typifying my invention.
On the drawings which l have chosen to illustrate an embodiment of my invention, it will be noted, by reference to Fig. 5, that l provide a body portion 11 formed of wire or other bendable material, and a prong portion 19. formedin the same piece o f material by bending the central portion thereof over upon itself and bending the resultant doubled portion outwardly so that it projects upwardly at an angle from the bottom 13 of said body portion. The ends 14k are free and, preferably, at a distance from each other. This permits bending them inwardly to decrease the width of the body portion so that it may be sprung into a holder 15 and have its parts 16 and 17 retained by bent-over flanges 18 on said holder. When so positioned, it may be moved horizontally and it will be obvious that a number of hooks may be placed in the same holder.
The body portion 11 is flat so that it may be seated well back in said holder, thereby rendering it possible to apply a label over it. Of course, it may be inserted over a previously applied label, and in this way a very fiexible and convenient arrangement is provided. Y
An identification check or tag 19 may be hung upon the prong to indicate the work man to vwhom an article has been issued, and will be removed when the article is returned. A number of such checks, of course, may be hung upon the same hook or, as previously stated, a plurality of hooks may be placed in the holder so that there will be a separate one for each check, thereby causing the numerals on each to be readily apparent.
A particular advantage of a hook of this kind is that the ends 21 of the flanges on the holder may be closed to prevent easy removal either of the label or the hook, Without interfering With the positioning of the hook or its removal by springing the ends in the manner hereinbefore described.
It is evident that the hook which have provided may be used for various purposes and for many types of articles other than checks, the foregoing illustration being used merely to show a convenient use. rlhe shape and design also may manifestly vary Widely While still embodyingthe principle of my invention.
It is thought that the invention and many of'its attendant advantages Will be understood from the foregoing description, and it Will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacriiicing'all of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim:
l. A check hook, comprising a resilient Wire body having spaced apart ends bendable toward each other whereby the body may be sprung into a flanged holder ha'- ing closed ends and returned to normal shape to cause it to beheld therein, and a prong extending from said body portion and at an angle With respect to said holder.
2. A Wire hook for identification checks and the like, comprising a prong and a body portion of spring material having spaced apart ends bendable toward each other whereby said body may be snapped into a flanged holder.
3. A hook for identification checks and the like, comprising a wire so bent as to form a flat body portion having free resilient ends, said Wire being bent over upon itself near its central portion and the doubled part then bent outwardly to form a prong extending upwardly from the bottom of said body portion.
et. A hook for identification checks and the like, made of Wire or other bcndablc material, having a flat resilient body portion provided with spaced apart ends bendable toward each other to permit insertion of the body in a flanged holder and a prongl extending at an angle from the bottom portion thereof.
5. A hook for identification checks and the like, comprising a flat body portion having free ends, adapted to be bent to permit placing' parts of said body portion beneath the bent-over iianges of the holder, and having a prong formed in the same piece of material which comprises the body so that it will project upwardly at an angle from said holder.
6. The combination of a label holder having marginal flanges, with closed ends, and a check hook, comprising ay Wire body having spaced apart ends bendable toward each other to permit insertion of the body behind the flanges of said holder.
7. The combination of a label holder having marginal flanges closed at the ends, and a check hook, comprising a wire body having spaced apart ends bendable toward cach other to permit insertion of the body behind the flanges of said holder, said body being' arrangeable through, behind, or in front of the label in the holder.
