Description
E. A. TUTTLEP Hot-Air Register and Ventilator.
. Patented June 10. 1856.
UNITED STA'ILES PATET OFFIGE.
EDWARD A. TUT'ILE, OF WILLIAM SBURGH, NEW YORK.
REGISTER AND VENTILATIOR.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 15,093, dated June 10, 1856; Reissued November 12, 1861, No. 1,234.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD A. TUTTLE, of IVilliamsburgh, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in lVarmAir Registers and Ventilators, of which I de clare the following to be a full and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawings and letters of reference marked thereon.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
The nature of my invention consists in an improved arrangement of the working parts of the ventilator by which the vibrating scroll front is made to operate .directly upon and in contact with unbalanced or wing valves in opening or closing the register, dispensing with the use of any connecting rods, links, or other apparatus used in the construction of other ventilators or registers.
I construct my ventilator of any desirable shape round, square, or otherwise. It consists of three parts, namely, the rim or frame A A, (see drawings), the vibrating front F F, and the wing valves B B. The valves B B are suspended in the frame A A in any usual manner allowing them to turn freely upon their axes a: 00, said axes being placed contiguous as shown in the drawings. On the valves I suspend the vibrating scroll front plate F F having its axis or center directly over the contiguous axes of the valves. From the back side of this vibrating or revolving front and at opposites from its center D I project forks or pins S S which operate upon the projections P P raised upon the valves near the line of their axis substantially as shown. By
turning the vibratory front the projections S S and P P, which are constantly in con- [Fmsr PRINTED 1912.]
tact, operate upon each other, and throw open the valves.
My improvement is intended chiefly to be used as a ventilator in the side walls of dwellings and many times above reach. In which case I attach cords to opposite sides of the vibrating front plate by which it is operated.
The improvements attained by my invention are (1st) simplicity of construction. The vibrating front, and wing valves, operating in contact by means of cast, or fast projections upon each, thus dispensing with any intermediate parts, such as connecting rods, levers, links, or other contrivances now used in the construction of ventilators, &c. (2d) By reason of its simplicity a great reduction in the cost of the ventilator. An improvement in appearance of the ventilators in dispensing with the projecting cross piece or levers usually placed upon or across the face of the ventilators and to which cords are attached.
In very large ventilators or square shaped I use a revolving piece covering a part of the front of the ventilator.
I do not claim the use of slots and pins as a device for opening the valves of ventilators or registers.
What I do claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The combination of the vibrating or revolving scroll front plate F F; and the wing valves B B, operating in contact, by means of cast or fast projections upon each at the points of connection, without the use of any intervening parts or pieces, and substantially as described.
EDWARD A. TUTTLE.
