WILLIAM MATT HEUN, 0F HASTINGS, NEBRASKA.
LADDER BRACKET.
Application filed September 4, 1923. Serial No. 660,816.
in the absence of the attachment, the ladder couldnot be used advantageously, the device, generally stated being in the nature of a prop, adapted to hold the ladder away from a building.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, withinthe scope ofwhat is claimed, changes in .the preciseembodiment of the. invention shown can bemade without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 shows in top plan, a device constructed in accordance with the invention, a portion of the ladder appearing in section; Figure 2 is a side elevation showing the device forming the subject matter of this application assembled with a ladder; and Figures 3 and 4 are diagrammaticviews illustrating some of the uses to which the device claimed may be put.
In the drawin s, the numeral 1 indicates the stile of a lad er, one of the rungs of the ladder appearing at 2. On each stile 1 is mounted a prop which will now be'described in detail.
The prop comprises a main member 3, in
the form of a bar, provided at its inner end with an extension 4 disposed at right angles to the bar 3, the extension carrying an inwardly projecting hook-shaped jaw 5, disposed approximately parallel to the main member or bar 3. An L-shaped jaw 6 is provided and includes an extension 7, connected by securin elements 8 to the main member or bar 3 t e jaws and 6 pro]ect1ng toward each other, 1n opposite directions,
andl being spaced apart transversely, the construction being such that when the opposite edges of the stile 1 are engaged by the jawsV 5 and 6 as shown in Figure 1, the main member 3 of the prop will stand at right angles to the stile 1'. Clamping devices 9, such as screws, may be mounted movably in the parts 6 and 5, and are adapted to engage the stile 1, as shown in Figure 1 to hold the prop thereon.- The main member 3 of the prop comprises an outwardly extended and laterally inclined arm 10. An extension 11 may be used, the same being pointed at its Working end, as shown at 12, the extension having loop-shaped guides 14 wherein ,the arm 10 is received. A securing device 15, such as a screw, connects the extension 4l1 detachably with the arm 10 of the prop. The arm 10 and the extensionl 11 are laterally and outwardly inclined as shown in Figure 1, the points 12 are spaced apart-by a distance greater than the width of the ladder, and consequently, a rm support for the ladder is provided, when the pointed ends 12 of the extension 11 are placed against the building.
The device is capable of many uses which will suggest themselves readily to the oper` ator. In'Figure 3, the lnumeral 16 denotes a roof carrying an eaves trough 17. Assuming that it is not desired to have the ladder 18 press against the eaves trough 17, thelextensions -11 may be caused to bear against the roof 16, as shown. The extensions 11 may be removed if desired, and the arms 10 may be..permitted to bear against the side wall 19l of a building, as shown in Figure 4, the ladder 20 being then located beneath the overhanging cornice 22 and the opegator being so placed that when he is on the ladder 20, he can Work upon the wall 19 or upon the under surface of the cornice 22z From the arm 10 a paint pot 21 or the like may lbe suspended, as shown. inl Figure 4.
` What is claimed is:
A ladder prop comprising a main member, provided at its inner end with an extension disposed at right angles to 'said member, the extension being provided with an inwardly extended jaw adapted to engage one edge of a ladder stile, and a second inwardly projecting jaw, adapted to engage the opposite edge of a ladder stile, the second jaw being mounted on v the main member, thejaws be,- ing spaced apart transversely to cause them meedoen@ to engage the respective edges of e ladder as my own, )I have hereto axed my signaslbile at diderent elevations, the inner ends ture in the presence of two Witnesses.l of the jaws being spaced separe im the direc:-1
