PHILIP P. MELANSO'N, OF MONCTON, NEW BRUNSWICK, CANADA.
ROOF-BRACKET.
Application filed October 23, 1919.
To all 4whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP l). MnLANsoN, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Moncton, in the Province of New Brunswick and Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and useful Roof-Bracket, of which the following is a specification.
lt is the object of this invention to provide a roof bracket of novel form, so constructed that an operator may work on the roof of a building, it being possible for workmen to work on the ends and the sides of the building.
The invention aims to improve generally z and to enhance the utility of devices of that type hereinafter described and claimed.
lith the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
ln the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows in perspective, a building whereunto the device forming the subject matter of this application has been applied; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the roof bracket; Fig. 3 is a plan of the roof bracket; and Fig. 4 .is a cross section on the line 4 4 of Fi .3.
'Bhe device forming the subject matter of this application includes a :base strip 1 provided at its upper end with an angular extension 2 constituting a supporting member. Brackets 3 are secured to the base strip 1, it being understood that there may be any desired number of these brackets on the base strip. The base strip 1 is provided at its lower end with a suspension device, preferably in the form of a hook 4. Plates 5 are secured to the base strip 1 at intervals, the plates being equipped with inner hooks 6 and with outer hooks 7. An angular arm S is connected at its inner end to the base strip 1 adjacent the upper end of the base strip. Adjustable supports, such as screws 9, are threaded into the base strip 1 at spaced points, the screws being supplied with feet 29.
The numeral 10 denotes a roof of a building, the ridge pole appearing at 11. The base strips 1 are mounted on the roof 10 Specification of Letters Patent.

near to the ends thereof, the extensions 2 engaging the ridge pole 11. Although the base strips are shown as applied to one slanting surface of the roof, only, it will be understood that both slanting surfaces of the roof may be equipped with base strips, after the manner of the showing of Fig. 1. The inner hooks 6 of the base strips l are connected by flexiblel elements 12, the angular arms 8 engaging the edges of the roof 10. Thus, the base strips 1 are prevented from sliding toward or away from each other. Ledge pieces 19 may be mounted in the brackets 3, and, thus, the entire surface of the roof 10 may be shingled, painted or operated on otherwise. Boards 14 or the like may be placed under the feet 29 of the screws 9, and, thus, the strips 1 may be elevated from the roof 10 so that it will be possible to paint, shingle, or work otherwise under the base strips. Boards 15 may be located on the roof and adjacent to the eaves, and over these boards may be trained ropes 16, the boards 15 serving to prevent and from the rope 17, any suitable meansV 18 may depend, for the support of a scaffold or the like, whereby operators may work at the ends of the building. To prevent the rope 17 from breaking the shingles at the ends of the roof 10, boards 25 may be placed beneath the member 17. Before the ledge pieces 19 have been assembled with the brackets 3, the brackets may be used to enable a person to ascend the roof 10.
It will be seen that the device forming the subject matter of this application is so constructed that it will be possible to work on both slanting surfaces of the roof 10, to work on the sides of the building, and to work on the ends of the building. A large gang may work at once 011 practically all of the exposed parts of the building.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. In a device of the class described a base strip provided at its upper end with a supporting member; a bracket on the base strip and means carried by the base strip for raising and lowering the base strip.
2. In a device of the class described a base Strip provided at its upper end With a snpporting' member; an angular arm projecting,r from the base strip adjacent to the upper end thereof; a bracket on the base strip; and means for raising and lowering the base strip.
In a device of the class described, a base strip provided at its upper end With a supportingl member; a screw threaded into the base stripy and constituting means for raising and lowering the base strip; and a bracket on the base strip,
et. In a device of theciass described, pairs of base strips, the strips of each pai-r have ing,` oppostely projecting Supporting mem` bers adapted to hool; over the' ridge pol'e of a roof; rst scaffolds supported from the lower ends of the strips of the different pairs; angular outstanding arms on the strips and adapted to engage the ends or a roof `to prevent the strips from moving inwardly when the scaliloldls S'Wi'ng; a connection yuniting the strips of each pair; second seafords suspended from the connections and disposed Substantially at right angles .to irst scaffolds; brackets on the base strips; ledge pieces mounted on the brackets; and connections uniting the strips of the different pairs to prevent a separation thereof and dislodginlg of the ledge pieces under' the Weight of they second sca-Holds.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, Ii have hereto affixed my Signature in the presence of two witnesses.
