Be it known that T, MILTON OWEN JEN- snx, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of hlissouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cartons; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in cartons and more particularly to those of the type in which a removable top is provided for the major portion of the carton or box, capable of being connected with the latter and held in a vertical. position for displaying an advertisement. 'While'l am aware that devices of this nature have been heretofore devised, it is the object of the present invention to provide an extremely and inexpensive construction by simple the use of which the box top will be rigidly held in a vertical position at the back of the box.
With the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, the description being supplemented by the accompanydrawing.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a carton constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a perspective view illustrating the manner of sliding the top rearwardly and forcing a portion of said top inwardly, preparatory to engaging it with the back wall of the box.
Figure 3 is a perspective view showing the top connected with the box in a vertical position for advertising purposes.
In the drawing above br efly described, the numeral 1 designates a box formed of cardboard or the like and provided with upstanding side walls 2. A covering 3 rests normally upon the walls 2 and is provided with depending flanges 4E surrounding said walls. This cover is formed with a slit 5 spaced inwardly from one of its flanges 4,
said slit having ends 6 which extend laterally away from said one flange. The portion 7 of the cover 3, within the confines of the slits 56, is normally in the same plane with the remainder of said cover. However, this portion 7 is adapted to be sprung inwardly as shown in Fig. 2, after releasing the front cover flange from the front wall of the box. The cover may then be slid rearwardly and swung to a vertical position so that the portion 7 will hook over the back wall of the box and one of the flanges 40f the cover 3 will frictionally engage the bottom of the box. Two of the flanges 4 which then stand vertically, snugly receive the rear portion of the box therebetween and it will thus be seen that the box and its top are rigidly held in the relation shown in Fig. 3, to effectively display an advertisement on the inner side of the cover. By having the advertisement on this particular side of the cover, it is protected against being mutilated in any manner while handling the box, before opening the latter for display purposes.
As excellent results have been obtained from the details disclosed, they are preferably followed. However, within the scope of the invention as claimed, numerous minor changes may be made.
I claim:
An article of manufacture comprising a box having vertical side walls, and a top having depending flanges to surround said walls, said top having a slit spaced inwardly from one of its flanges and formed with lateral ends extending away from said flange, said lateral ends of the slit terminating a distance from said flange slightly greater than the height of the box walls; whereby the portion of the top within the confines of the slit may be hooked over the edge of one wall of the box and said flange frictionally. inserted under the box, when said top is slid from a horizontal to a vertical position and said portion sprung lnwardly.
