Patented May 12,1874.

monnzva WITNESSES [U TED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
GUILFORD NORTON, OF SOUTH BOSTON, MASSAOHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN HATCHETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 15Q,778, dated May 12, 1874: application filed March 21, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it'known that I, GUILFORD NORTON, of South Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Combined Claw-Hammer and Hatchet, of which the following is a specification:
The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved combined hatchet and hammer, and Fig. 2 is a top view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the prolongation or extension of the top of the shank from around the eye to form the claws B, the said extension being bent toward the bit of the hatchet for forming the rocker on which to pull the nails, and it is also bent in this direction because, the hammer being shorter than the hatchet, there is less obstruction by it to the swinging of the tool on the rocker than there would be by the longer hatchet-blade. O is the blade of the hatchet, which is made in skeleton form to provide the bar 1), for detachably connecting the bit E, so that it can be replaced when worn out, which is essential, for the hammer portion of the tool will wear out several bits. The screws F for bolting on the bit will be forged into the bit when it is hammered out; but they may be tapped in, if preferred.
I am aware of the patent granted to T. S. Goffin, No. 83,453, October 27, 1868, and hereby disclaim the same.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of bit E, having projecting threaded studs F, with hammer A, having apertured blade 0, with the top bar D, constructed as described, to enable the bit to be detachably fastened by the screw-threaded studs and nuts to the hatchet, in the manner set forth.
GUILFORD NORTON.
