BOBBIN RETAINER.
Application filed` April 1G, 1923. lSerial No; 632,444.
To all whom 'it 92mg/ concern: j
Be it kno-wn that I, Louis A. CADonnT, a citizen ot the United States, residing at Paw-tuckcuin the county ot Providence and State ot Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bobbin Retainers; and I do declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description ot the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to malte and use the same. A I
This invention relates to an improved bobbin retainer of the type which is intended to be permanently secured to the' shuttle and to grip the bobbin to retain the latte-r inv operative position so as to permit t-he usual pivoted spindle to be entirely dispensed with.
The principal object o't'the invention is lto generally improve upon retainers of this type and to provide one ot extreme simplicity and durability which is composed of a single length of resilient wire so designed as to provide unique attaching means and gripping jaws.
It. is also an object of the invention to provide a retainer of this type which is so designed as to permit it. to be attached to the shuttle without requiring extensive alteration thereof, kyet insuring against accidental displacement o-r loose movement of the retainer.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a top plan view of one end ot a conventional type otshuttle sho-wing the improved bobbin retainer connected therewith.
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of Fig.- l.
Figure 3 is a side elevation with portions broken away and shown in section to disclose the construction of parts more clearly.
Figure 4 is a transverse vertical section 'ta-lien on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Figure 5 is a detail perspective view of the improved retainer.
In t-he drawings, the reference character S designates a conventional type of shuttleI and B designates an ordinary bobbin which vis used in connection therewith.
As before intimated, it is my aim to eliminate the usual pivoted spindle and to provide a. unique type ot retainer for directly engaging the bobbin and holding it in operative position. Probably the retainer could be constructed otherwise, but by preference it is formed from a single-length of wire which is bent between its ends as indicated at l to provide a -pairot spaced parallel f upper attaching 'arms 2.` rThese arms are bent atright angles as at 3 to providewhat may be conveniently termed abutments. i Beyond the abutments, the arms are bent into parallelism as at 4 and are directed laterally inward at 5, then down at right angles `and bowedy outwardly so as to form substantially arcuate gripping jaws 6 adapted for reception .inv the usual .groove in ,the head ot the bobbin B. The wire is extended from the lower ends of the` jaws as at 7 to form a pair ot lower attaching arms and the tree extremities of these are bentlaterally as at Sto serve a purpose to be hereinafter described. VVith the form of retainer described, it is obviousthatit is only necessary to form comparatively shallow recesses R in the left-hand endfot the shuttle.
In applying the retainer to the shuttle, the pairs of upper and lower attaching arms are permitted to straddle the web WV of the shuttle. This web is formed near its free end with a vertical bore and a bolt 9 is passed through the bore, this bolt being em ployed for the ypurpose of retaining the plate l0 in place against the undergrooved side of the web. As clearly shown in Fig. 4, this plate extends cross-wise of the tree ends of the attaching arms 7 and when the nut on the upper end of the bolt is tightcned, the plate is bound tightly against the arms and the latter are in turn bound against the web so as to securely maintain the bobbin retainer in place. It is also to be noted, as seen in Fig. 3, that the laterally.
directed ends 8 of the lower attaching arms abut the adjacent edge ot the plate 10 and prevent twisting or rotation of the retainer.
In use, it is obvious that the portion ot the head of the bobbin beyond the usual groove is received between the so-called abutments 3 and the laterally bent v,portions 5, the curvedy jaws 6 being received in the groove and serving to tightly hold the bobbin in place.
I claim:
l. A bobbin retainer of the type speciied, comprising attaching arms provided adjacent one endwith U-shaped portions 'for accommodating a portion ot the head of the bobbin, the outer ends `ot said arms being directed vertically for reception in the usual groove in said head.
2. A bobbin retainer of the character specified, formed from a single length or wire bent between its ends to provide attaching arms, portions of said arms adjacent the outer ends thereof being bent to provide substantially U-shaped portions for accommodating a portion of the vhead of the bobbin, the wire beyond said U-shaped portions being directed at right angles to provide portions for reception in the usual groove or' said bobbin head.
V3. A bobbin retainer formed from a single length of wire bent between its ends to form a pair of attachino' arms, said arms being Ibent adjacent one end to provide substantially Uf-shape-d portions and being,` then bent downwardly and bowed outwardly to provide substantially arcuate gripping jaws, the ends of thel wire being bent at right angles from said jaws to extend in spaced parallelism with the rst named attaching arms to provide a pair of lower attaching armsj the extremities of said lower' arms being,` bent laterally.
1l. A bobbin retainer formed from a single length of wire bent between its ends 2 to provide spaced attaching arms, said arms being bent adjacent their outer ends to provide opposed U-shaped portions for accommodating a portion of the head of the bobbin, the wire. beyond said U-shaped portions being directed.downwardly at right angles and bowed outwardly to provide arcuate portions for reception in the usual groove in the head of the bobbin, ythe eX- tremities of the. wire being bent into parala lelism with said irst named arms to provide lower attaching' arms.
in testimony whereof l have hereunto aitixcd my signature.
