FIGURE WHEELED TOY.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that WVILLIAM E. O'm, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Figure Wheeled Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in wheeled toys and has particular reference to a toy which is mounted on wheels, of a greater number than two wheels, and which has a handle of a greater length than the height of the toy which handle is pivotally attached to the toy in such manner that it may be swung to the front whereby the toy may be pulled or may be swung to the rear in order that the toy may be pushed.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein,

Fig. 3 shows a portion of the horizontal base-bar of the detachable portion of the toy to illustrate the engaging groove therein, and
Fig. at illustrates a cross-sectional detail through the base of the toy to show the means for detachably holding the detachable figure-portion of the toy to the base.
In the drawing the numeral 5 designates the base which in the present instance is of a rectangular shape and which is mounted on four wheels 6, so it may be completely supported b the wheels while being rolled along a surface.
The base is provided with a central longitudinal groove 7 which opens at the top surface 8 and this groove is of less length than the base but has an end 9 that opens at one end of the base.
On the interior of the groove 7, there is provided a plate 10, which has an upwardly and inwardly-extending hook 11, at one side while at the opposite side said plate carries a spring arm 12, which extends forwardly in a horizontal direction in the groove. By preference, the upper edge of the hook 11, is located in a horizontal plane below the top surface 8 of the base and is therefore concealed in the groove. A single retaining screw 13, serves to hold the plate and its book and arm in place within the slot.
In carrying out my invention I provide a plurality of detachable elements for each base so that one or another of said elements may be attached to the base at a time and thus enable the appearance of the toy to be changed at the will of the child whereby to increase the interest and pleasure of the child in the toy.
These detachable elements 14 may have various forms but in the present instance I have given it a shape or configuration to illustrate, for example, a duck.
Each detachable element is provided with a horizontal base-bar 15 of a height and width, or cross-sectional shape, to permit it to slide longitudinally in the groove 7 of the base and fill the groove in a direction from end to end. At one vertical side, the base-bar is provided with a horizontal groove 16 which latter extends from the forward end of the bar toward the rear thereof. This base-bar groove is so positioned that it will aline with and receive the inturned hook 11, down in the base groove while the spring-arm 12, will frictionally en-- gage the base-bar at the side opposite to the said groove 16.
It will therefore be understood that when the base-bar 15, of the detachable figure-element 14, of the toy is inserted at the end 9 of the base groove it may be pushed forwardly in the base-groove 7 between the hook 11 and spring-arm 12 so as to be clamped as it were between said hook and arm and thereby be held in place in the base" groove.
In further carrying out my invention I desire to provide a handle structure that will be capable of extending forwardly from the base or swung to the rear of the base in order that a child may pull or push the toy as it desires. To do this I provide a handle 17 preferably of wire which is twisted at 18 and formed into a loop 19 for engagement by the hand, and from the twisted portion I spread the wire strands apart to form two arms 20. These spread arms 20 straddle the detachable figure-element 14 and have their ends pivotally connected at 21, to opposite sides of the base 5, substantially midway between the ends of the latter while the length of the arms from the pivot-point to 1 able element slidable into said base-groove,

Having described my invention, I claim,
1. A'toy having a base With sufficient Wheels to sustain it in a horizontalplane, said base having a longitudinal groove that opens at one end thereof, a figured detachmeans in the groove for holding said element in. place and a handle having two arms that are pivotally attached to the base at opposite sides of the groove, said arms being movable to a position in front or at the rear Wheels to sustain it in a horizontal plane and said base having a longitudinal groove in I its upper side thatv opens at one end thereof, a detachablefigured element slidable into said groove and said element also having a groove in its side, a hook-device in said baseg'r'oove to engage the groove in said element, and a handle pivotally attached to the base at opposite sidesof the base-groove ture.
