ARTICLE HOLDER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, BEN EAcrrus, a citizenof the United States, and a resident of Gallipolis, in the county of Grallia and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in. Article Holders, of which the following is a specification This invention relates in general to an article holder and more particularly to a combined automobile curtain holder and tool and articlecarrier.

The object of the invention is to provide an article holder of this character which is well adapted to carry in compact form ourtains of an automobile or similar vehicle and yet maintain the same readily available and accessible while preserving the curtains safe from injury or damage, the article holder at the same time being adapted to contain and house tools and various articles.

Another object is to provide an article holder of this character and having the foregoing advantages and which is at the same time of simple and durable construction reliable in use, easily handled and carried and adapted to be manufactured at comparatively slight expense from materials and by means of facilities ordinarily available.

Other objects and advantages of the in vention reside in certain novel features of the construction, combination and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification and in which:

Figure 3 is a view thereof in diametrical longitudinal section, parts being'shown in elevation for the sake of illustration; and

Referring to'the drawings wherein for the sake of illustration is shown thepreferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 10 designates an open ended cylinder which may be constructed of light weight sheet metal, or any suitable material which is light in weight and yet provides a suitable strong and rigid structure. At each end of the cylinder 10 an outwardly extending annular flange 11 is provided and may be integral with the cylinderor otherwise suitably connected thereto. The flanges 11 and the comprehended outer periphery of the lized to hold the curtains on the drum thus 2 provided. WVith the curtains so carried on the drum they'are compactly and securely packed or carried and are not liable to have the celluloid portions thereof crack or otherwise injured or damaged. At the same time the curtains are quickly and readily available when it is desired to use the same.

The interior. of the cylinder provides a tool and article receiving space and this space is preferably divided up into com-j partments by means of a partition 15 of circular form whichis fitted into the cylinder l0 and secured in position by means of apertured ears 16 integrally formed with the partition 15 and riveted or otherwise secured by fastening means to the c linder 10. Closures are provided for the en of the cylinder and preferably these closures com prise circular closure plates 18 hingedly connected, as at 19 tothe flanges 11 at the ends of'the cylinder. These two closure plates are of identical construction, and asshown each is sohinged on its flange 11 as to swing toward and away from the flange 11 audits end of the cylinder, the axis of swing being at right angles to though readily spaced from the longitudinal axis of the cylinder.

At a point diametrically opposite its hinged connection 19 each closure plate is provided in its peripherywith a radially extending notch 20.1 A releasable fastening device is provided for these closure plates and may comprise a swinging latch 21 pivotally connected to its flange 11 by means of a pivot pin 22 and having a finger piece 23 whereby it may be readily manipulated. Then it is desired to bring the plates 20 to closed position the fastening devices are rotated so as to extendoutwardly from the flanges 11 to which they are pivoted and the plates 18 are then brought flush up against theflanges 11,

the pivots22 and the adjacent portions of the fastening devices 21 bein accommodated inthe notches 20 of the phates. With the parts so positioned the latches 20 are rotated so as to engage and overlie the closure plates as illustrated in Figure 2, the pivots 22 being sufficiently long to permit of this actioin and the fastening devices 21 being constructed of resilient metal so as to resiliently and friction-ally engage the closure plates 11. It is to be understood that the plates 11 may also be constructed of resilient metal or any other suitable material.

Handles '25 are pivotally mounted by means of straps 26 on the plates 11 and at ford a ionvenient means for handling the article holder. These handles are rotatably mounted on the plates by strap bearings 26 in order to permit them to be folded flush up against the plates when not in use but preferably they include a bowed portion 25" (See Figure :2) to facilitate gripping of the same.
