Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFTCE.
J. C. DICKINSON AND ROBERT BATE, OF HUDSON, MICHIGAN.
:POCKET-BOOK.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 15,068, dated June 10, 1856.
To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that we, J. C. DIoKINsoN and ROBERT BATE, of Hudson, in the county of Lenawee and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Device to be Attached to Pocket-Books, said device being a fastening for securing the pocket-book in the pocket, preventing its extraction therefrom by pickpockets; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification.
Figure l, is an end view of our improvement. Fig. 2, is a longitudinal section of ditto, the plane of section being through the center.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two gures.
Our invention consists in attaching a plate to one side of the pocket book, and having hooks secured to one end of the plate, so that when the vpocket book is placed in the pocket, the books will catch into the lining, and .prevent the pocket book from being readily extracted from, or casually slipping out of the pocket. A slide is over the plate as will be presently shown, so that the hooks may be covered when necessary.
To prevent those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct our invention, we will proceed to describe it.
A, represents a pocket book, constructed in any of the known forms, and B represents a metallic plate attached to one side of the pocket book by screws (d).
plate B, hasv its edges or sides bent, so as to form grooves (b) (b), one at each side of the plate B, and a plate C, having lugs or projections (c) at its sides is fitted over the plate B, the lugs or projections fitting in the grooves (b) (b), see Fig. l.
The
To one end of the plate B, hooks (d) are attached. These hooks are small, and their points do not project much beyond the outer surface of the plate B, see Fig. 2. Three or more hooks may be attached to the plate B, and if desired, at both ends of it.
Vhen the pocket book is placed in the pocket, the plate C, is withdrawn, and when the pocket book is drawn upward, as in taking it out of the pocket, the hooks (CZ) will catch into the lining (e) of the pocket, shown in red, in Fig. 2. Thus it will be seen that the hooks (d) will prevent the pocket book from casually slipping out of the pocket, and will also prevent its being extracted therefrom by a pick pocket, as the pocket book would require to be gently worked downward, before being drawwn outward, in order to disengage the hooks from the lining (e). l/Vhen the hooks are not required to be used, the plate C, may be fitted over the plate B, and the hooks will be prevented from coming in contact with or catching into the lining of the pocket.
The above improvement will be foundan effectual barrier against the ingenuity and adroitness of pick pockets. The device is simple, and the cost trifiing.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
The plat B, with hooks (d) attached, the plate being secured at one side of the pocket book, and used with or without the sliding plate O, substantially as, and for the purpose specified.
J. O. DIOKINSON. ROBERT BATE.
