Be it'known that I, GUIDO TANzI, a subject of the King of Italy, and resident of Long Island City, county of Queens, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Macaroni Dies, of which the following is thespecification.
The device, the subject of this invention is a die especially designed and intended for producing fusillo7 macaroni.
In the past, fusillo macaroni has been produced by forming a tubular macaroni of any desired diameter, 'rolling-or curling said tube upon a stick and then rolling the stick upon a dough'board to set the curl.
It will be appreciated that the work of producing fusillo macaroni has been eX- pensive, it requiring an o erator for each opening in the die and suc operators must be skillful, otherwise irregular curls are produced. An objection to the former method has been that of cost, because of the work, because of the irregular forms, due to the skill or lack of skill of the operator and because of the fact that in rolling, the perforation or hole through the macaroni was closed.
It is my desire to produce this curled macaroni in true tubular form and with the curls always uniform and to do this work automatically, thereby increasing the quality of the product and quantity of production and in the specification which follows I will describe the device which I employ for the purpose sought. The accompanying drawing should be referred to for a'complete understanding of the specification which follows.

Similar reference numerals indicate like parts in all the gures where they appear.
In the drawing and description herewith presented, I will show and describe a small die, one having but one annular recess and 4 through forming members, but I desire it understood that this die may be made with a plurality of forming members as are customary in all macaroni dies.
The diameters of macaroni dies vary with the work to be produced and the size of the machines employed and the number of work elements and perforations as determined by the size of the die and the relative diameter of the' work members.
This die is provided with a die plate 10 and a support 11. In the die plate, I produce a number of recesses 12, into each of which I place an insert member 13 providing Suitable means, such as the shoulder 14 and angular portion 15 for thev support of the insert.
The insert 13 is provided with a shouldered and tapered, obliquely disposed perforation as shown at 16 and in this perforation I insert av hollow pin member as shown at 17 and in elevation in Fig. 5 and I call particular attention to the fact that the perforation 18, serving as an outlet for material passing through the hollow portion of the pin member 17 is arranged at one side of the axial center of the pin member and that this pin member is provided with a plurality of supporting wings '19, 20 and 2l and the projecting pin 22, projecting into the discharge aperture 23 of the shouldered and tapered recess 16.
Each of the work perforations in the die, regardless of the number, is providedy withan insert 13 and pin member 17 as shown and described and I may place a screen member 24 over the die, to prevent the passage of foreign matter, that may be present in the dough.
It will be noted that the discharge apertures as described are arranged on an angle and that adjacent to the discharge apertures I provide an annular trough 25, by extending upward the outer wall .of the die as shown at 26.
Through the supporting member 11 and adjacent to each of the insert members 13 is a perforation or aperture 27, through which the work is discharged and in the underside of the die plate 10, adjacent to the discharge aperture 23 and pin 22, I provide a crescent shaped recess 28, for a purpose that shall appear later. The die plate 10 and support 11 may be secured together by pins 29 and 30 and as shown in Fig. 4 the center of the die plate may be continued upward to produce a long cone 31 which will lessen the necessary pressure by lessening the fiat surfaces upon which dough may become compressed.
ln setting the hollow pin 17, the discharge opening or hole 18 should be so positioned that the material passing t erethrough will form the outside or greatest diameter of the spiral.
In the operation, with the parts arranged as shown, the dough is forced through the screen 24 into the passage 25 and a portion of the dough will pass around the pin 17, between the wings v 19, 20 and 21. The greater 'portion of the dough will pass through the pin 17 and through the aperture 18 therein. All of the dough will be discharged through the discharge aperture 23 in the insert 13, the pin 22 forming a hole through the finished product.
The crescent shaped recess 28 will receive the product upon its discharge from the passage 23, and as the greater quantity of dough being discharged through the hole 18 is at one side of the pin 22, the resultant tube of macaroni will be given a twist or a rotation imparted thereto that will result in turning the macaroni into a long open spiral curl as shown at 32 in Fig. 6. The spiral resulting entirely from a compound discharge aperture and the crescent shaped recess which directs the material and guides it as it leaves the forming die. l
The screen 24 may be omitted and other modifications made, but I prefer the whole as shown and described.
Having carefully, and fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to obtain by Letters Patent is 1. Means for producing spiral macaroni, which consists of a die having a compound opening, a pin arranged therein and means for guiding the product upon its discharge.
2. lvfeans for producing spiral macaroni, which consists of a die having a compound opening, said die being provided with a crescent shaped recess for guiding said macaroni.
3. A die for producing spiral macaroni, comprising a die plate having a plurality of discharge openings, a hollow pin arranged in each said opening, said pin having a discharge passage supplementing the nor mal discharge passage and adapted to allow additional material to pass, to elongate one wall of the product.
4. A die for producing spiral macaroni, comprising a die plate having a plurality of inserts therein, each said insert being provided with a perforation and an obliquely disposed hollow pin in each said perforation, each said pin having a discharge passage therethrough.
5. A die for producing spiral macaroni having a die plate, a plurality of inserts therein, each said insert being provided with an obliquely disposed perforation in the inner wall thereof and a pin in each said perforation, the outer and inner walls of said die plate being extended upward at an angle to direct material through said perforations.
