This invention relates to the manufacture of macaroni and particularly to the production of a substantially torpedo-shaped tubular body having ribbed walls and a die so constructed as to produce said body, and the object of the invention is to provide a die, the die plate or body of which is provided with series or groups of intercommunicating mold bores, each group consisting of two or more bores with passages extending from the end bores, the latter retarding the fiow of macaroni dough through the die to form, on the ends of the finished product, substantially conical or contracted ends producing the torpedo-shape; a further object being to provide, in conjunction with the bores of the macaroni die, die pins which are so shaped and positioned in each group of bores as to encourage the flow of the macaroni at one side of the group of bores to cause the product discharged from the die to curl into substantially tubular form and also to produce, at longitudinally spaced intervals on the finished product, the circumferential ribs of tubular cross sectional form; a further object being to so fashion the passages of the die as to provide, on the finished product intermediate and outwardly of the tubular ribs, smaller solid circumferential ribs; and with these andother objects in view the invention consists in a macaroni product of the type described and the dies for producing the same, which is more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which:-

In Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive 1 have indicated at 10 a part of the die bed or plate of a macaroni press or similar machine commonly known in the art, and in carrying my invention into effect the plate is provided with series or groups of mold bores and, in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, I have shown one of said groups which, in the construction shown, consists of three similar bores 11, 12 and 13 arranged in close proximity to each other, the upper end of each bore is enlarged as seen 55 at 11a, 12a and 13a. These bores are reduced as seen at 11b, 12b and 13b, note Fig. 2 of the drawing, forming shoulders 14, and are further reduced to form relatively small discharge openings 11c, 12c and 130 which join and communi- 7 cate with the reduced portions 11b, 12b and 13b in the beveled walls 15. 7
Intermediate the reduced portions 111) and 110, 1212 and 120 are relatively narrow passages 16 and similar passages 1'7 intermediate the reduced portions 12b12c and 1317-430, and the passages l6 and 17 extend from a point above the shoulders 14 outwardly through the lower face of the die, this is clearly represented in Fig. 3 of the drawing. Other passages 18 and 19 similar to the passages 16 and 1'? extend outwardly and angularly with respect to the reduced portions 11c-13c in the manner shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing, and these passages begin at the lower end of the reduced portions 111) and 13b and 5 open outwardly through the lower face of the die as indicated in Fig. 3.
The purpose of this construction is to encourage or produce a faster flow of the macaroni dough through the passages 16 and 17 and to retard the flow through the passages 18 and 19, so as to produce on the finished macaroni product indicated at 20, Figs. 8 and 9 of the drawing, contracted or conical end portions 2000 as will be apparent.
One side wall of each of the passages 1617, 18-19 is provided with a groove 16a-1'7a, 18a- 19a opening through the lower face of the die plate so as to form, on the outer surface of the tubular macaroni product 20, a series of circumferential ribs or beads 20b.
Disposed in each of the bores 11, 12 and 13 as well as the reduced extensions thereof are die pins 21, which are of identical construction, therefore, the brief description of one will apply to all.
The pin 21 has enlarged upper ends 210. which fit in the bores 11a, 12a and 13a and seat on the shoulders 14, as clearly seen in Figs. 2 and 4 of the drawing. Extending from the enlarged portion 21a is a reduced portion 2122 at the end of which is a circular pin 21c joining the portion 21?) by a bevel 2101. One side of the portion 21b is flattened in alinement with the outer surface of the circular pin 210 as seen at 21c, and also in alinement with a groove or channel 211 formed in the enlarged end 21a of the pin. The channels 21 form the passages through which the dough passes from the upper surface of the die plate downwardly through the bores around the reduced extension 21b21c and out through the lower surface of the die, in the form of a substantially circular or tubular body, which forms on the resultant product 20, a tubular rib 20c disposed intermediate the rib 20b. The channels 21 continue through the reduced portion 21b in a semicircular groove 21g, note Fig. 4 of the drawing, which provides a greater area to that part of the bore in which the reduced portion 21b is disposed, and this, in conjunction with the -arrangement of the channels 21 atone side only of the group of bores 11, 12 and 13, as is clearly illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing, causes a greater feed of the macaroni dough at one side of the group of bores than at the other side thereof, causing the dough to curl as it discharges through the lower face; of the die plate.
By intermittently cutting oil the curled dough with a knife or other tool 22 movable over the lower surface of the die plate, a series of macaroni product 20 will be intermittently formed, the number of products 20 produced by each stroke of the knife will depend entirely upon the number of bore groups employed on the die plate as well as the size or diameter of said plate.
In the foregoing description it will be understood that, as the macaroni press operates, the dough is forced downwardly through the bores 11, 1-2 and 13, through the chambers or channels 21 J formed in the pins 21, then into the reduced extensions 11b, 12b and 13b of the bores as well as into the passages 16 and 17, then into the passages 18 and 19, as well as the bore discharges llc, 1-2cand 130. By reason of the short passages 18 and 19, the progress of the dough therethrough is retarded, causing the same to contract, and producing the conical or contracted ends 20a on the 'tubularproduct 20.
In Fig. 6 of the drawing, I have shown a slight modification in the form of the pin employed, wherein the side of the enlargement 21a opposite the channel 21 is flattened, as indicated at 21h, to provide a slight flow of macaroni dough at the opposite side of the enlargement, and this will not in any way 'e'ifect the production of the -product 20 shown in Figs. 8 and 9 of the drawing, but in the use of same macaroni dough will insure the proper formation of the tubular ribs 200 and, in this connection, it will beunderstood that any type of dough may be employed depending entirely on the -desires of the manufacturer and it will also be apparent that my invention is not necessarily limited to the grooves 16a, 17a, 18a and 19a, as the product may be produced withoutthe ribs 201) as will be apparent.
In Fig. 7 of the drawing, I have shown a slight modification wherein the cross sectional contour of the discharge passages or bores 11c, 12c, and 13a 'are modified to produce square or rectangular passages 23, 23a and 23b, and in like manner I have substituted, for the round end 210 of the pin, pins 'of rectangular cross section as indi- "cated at 24 in said figure to be consistent with the rectangular contour-of the passages 23, 23a and 23b, and substituted for the round or semicircular grooves 16a, 17a, 18a and 19a are angular grooves 16bl'lb, 18b and 1%. In other words, the products produced by the die, shown in Fig. '7, will have angular ribs substituted for the semicircular ribs 201) and rectangular ribs substituted for the circular ribs 200 and, in this connection, it will be understood that the showing of the die 10 and mold bores in Figs. 1 to 7 inclusive is enlarged for the sake of clarity.
My invention is not limited to the use of the number of ribs employed, and various other changes in and modifications of the construction herein shown and described may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. A macaroni product of the class described consisting-of an open tubular body having contracted end portions, a plurality of circumferential ribs spaced longitudinally of said body, and said ribs being tubular in cross sectional form.
2. A macaroni product of the class described consisting of an open tubular body having contracted end portions, a plurality of circumferential ribs spaced longitudinally of said body, and said ribs being tubular in cross sectional form and disposed inwardly of the contracted ends of said body.
3. A macaroni product of the class described consisting of an open tubular body having contracted end portions, a plurality of circumferential ribs "spaced longitudinally of said body, said 7 ribs being tubular in cross sectional form and disposed inwardly of the contracted ends of said body, and other solid ribs intermediate the first named ribs and on one surface only of said body.
4. A product of manufacture consisting of a substantially torpedo-shaped body of macaroni split longitudinally of one side of said body, said body having circurnferentially arranged and iongitudinally spaced ribs, andsaid ribs being tubui-ZO lar in form.
5. In a macaroni die of the class described, a group of bores extending through the die plate, the upper ends of the bores being enlarged and the lower ends thereof contracted to form relatievly small and substantially tubular discharges, relatively thin passages disposed between and placing adjacent bores of a group in communica tion at points below the enlarged upper ends of said bores, and shorter passages extending angularly from the end bores at the discharge ends only thereof, all of said passages opening inwardly through the lower surface of the die and in communication with the reduced tubular passages of said bores, die pins of similar contour disposed in each of said bores, the lower ends of said pins fitting into the reduced passages of the bores to form core members therein and the upper end portions of the pins being channeled or grooved at one side thereof to permit the feed of macaroni dough into the discharges of said bores and said passages, and the channels or grooves of the pins being all directed toward the angular inclination of the last named end passages to produce a curling of the macaroni product as it is discharged from the die plate to produce of said product an open tubular body having contracted ends.
9. A macaroni die of the class described, a group of die bores having the axis of said bores in common alinement, the upper ends of the bores being enlarged and independent of each other, the lower ends of said bores being reduced, relatively thin passages placing the reduced ends of the bores in communication with said passages and opening outwardly through the lower surface of the die and being in alinement with the axis of the passages, die pins disposed in said bores, said pins having reduced ends arranged in the reduced ends of said bores to form thereof tubular discharges joined by said intermediate passages and other passages extending divergently with respect to each other and the end bores and opening outwardly through the lower face of the die plate and in communication with the end tubular discharges.

A macaroni die of the class described, a group of die bores having the axis of said bores in common alinement, the upper ends of the bores being enlarged and independent of each other, the lower ends of said bores being reduced, relatively thin passages placing the reduced ends of the bores in communication with said passages and opening outwardly through the lower surface of the die and being in alinement with the axis of the passages, die pins disposed in said bores, said pins having reduced ends arranged in the ends of said bores to form thereof tubular discharges joined by said intermediate passages, other passages extending divergently with respect to each other and the end bores and opening outwardly through the lower face of the die plate and in communication with the end tubular discharges, and said divergent passages being of less transverse dimensions than the intermediate passages to retard the flow of macaroni dough through said divergent passages.

A macaroni die of the class described, a group of die bores having the axis of said bores in common alinement, the upper ends of the bores being enlarged and independent of each other, the lower ends of said bores being reduced, relatively thin passages placing the reduced ends of the bores in communication With said passages and opening outwardly through the lower surface of the die and being in alinement with the axis of the passages, die pins disposed in said bores, said pins having reduced ends arranged in the ends of said bores to form thereof tubular discharges joined by said intermediate passages, other passages extending divergently with respect to each other and the end bores and opening outwardly through the lower face of the die plate and in communication with the end tubular discharges, said divergent passages being of less transverse dimensions than the intermediate passages to retard the flow of macaroni dough through said divergent passages, and the pins arranged in said group of bores having channels disposed at one side of the group of bores and in the direction of said divergent passages.
