HOSE-MAKING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 18, 11919.
Application filed March so, 1918. Serial No. 225,654.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. ODEN, residing at Brooklyn, in the county ofKings and State of New York, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Hose- Making Machines, is a specification.
This invention relates machine.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and eflicient machine whereby a coating of rubber or the like may be applied to hose or the like in such manner that the coating is of substantially uniform density throughout, and in which the machine parts employed will not be-subject to undue heating during operation. I w
A more detailed object is. to provide a machine by which a supply of rubber or the like may be fed to the tube from opposite provide feeding means of a to a. hose-making of application, as to serve as efficient agitator and mixer means adapted to improve the uniformity of the application.
Other objects and aims of the invention, more or less specific than those referred to above, will be in part obvious and in part pointed out in the course of the following description of the elements, combinations, arrangements of parts and applications of principles, constituting the invention; and the scope of protection contemplated will be indicated in the appendedclaims.
In the accompanying drawings which are to be taken as a part of this specification, and in which I have shown merely a preferred form of embodiment of the invention:
Figure 1 is a horizontal sectional view through a device constructed in accordance with this invention, the section being taken the plane of line I of .2. %ig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially upon the plane of line II of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a detail view of the die employed.
In describing the exemplary structure which is illustrated in the drawings, the reference character L indicates the body. The reference character G indicates the head, while the reference character H indicates the tube or the like which is being fed of which the following and in such relation to the point through the machine to receive its rubber coating 1.
I The body L is formed with a feed opening 2 extending longitudinally central therethrough through which the tube H passes. 18 provided a screw pocket 3' contalnlug a screw 4. These screw pockets are arranged in divergent relation so that their forward open ends, as '5, stand nearest to the feed openingpwhile their rear ends are farthest spaced apart.
The screws 4 may be driven in any suitable manner but for convenience are shown to be connected by shafts 6 with gears 7 which are in turn arranged to be driven by a drive gear 8 through the medium of an intermediate pinion 9, the ion 9 being conveniently illustrated as rotatably mounted upon an projecting from the body L as a continuation of the feed opening 2.
The rubber or the like for use in the machine may be fed to the screw through suitable hoppers 11. a
The head G comprises a main part 12 having means such as the ears 13 by 'which At each side of the feed opening gear 8 and pin-,
extension sleeve 10 pockets it may be bolted to the body L, and a die I part 14.- carried within the main part 12. The die is removably held in place by means of a screw sleeve 15 and may be laterally adjusted by means of a series of set screws 16 carried by the part'12 and engaging pe-.
ripheral portions of the die at different raends 5 of both of the screw pockets. Thewalls preferably are curved substantially as illustrated, so as to better facilitate the passage of the rubber. toward the opening 17.
A/hollow guide member 19 is fixed to thebody to form a continuation of the feed opening through the die and into close proximity to the opening 17 of the die. This guide member is tapered so that its forward annular edge is quite thin. At its rear end it is preferably threaded into the body, as at 50 Y ranged one at each side. of said opening,
. 20, so that it may be readily removed for prisin substituting a guide of a different size in accordance with the size of tube H which is to be covered.
- It will benoted that the operation of this machine the rubber from the pockets 3 is fed with great force immediately into the die at substantially diametrically opposite sides of the tube H. It flows in both directions about the guide 19 as it moves the short distance through the die to the opening 17. Rubber from one screw pocket passes upwardly about the guide 19 while other rubher from the same pocket passes downwardly about the guide. These two bodies of rubber meet corresponding bodies from the second screw pocket at a point substantially midway and, due partly to the reducing diameter of thevdie and partly to the churning, or agitating, action of the closely juxtaposed screws, the joint between the meeting bodies becomes more or less kneaded. homogeneous union and an even density is thus secured as the joining bodies are forced out through the openin 17.
The disposition of tlie screw pockets at an actue an le relative to the line of feed of the tube enables the rubber to move toward and through the opening 17 without material change in its general direction of travelf This also increases the efficiency of the device and provides a structure in which. no packing is required be tween any of the moving parts.
7 As many changes could bem'ade in this construction without departing from the scope of the inventionas defined in the following claims, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings, shall be interpreted as illustrative only and not in a llmitmg sense.
Hav ng thus described my invention, what I clainr as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1". device of the class described coma body member having an opening theret rough through which a tube or the like to be covered may be passed, the de-- vice having apair of screw .pockets arscrews within said pockets terminating .in
'C1OS0 proximity to one end of said opening, and means 'whereby material fed .by sa1d screws will be directed toward the longitudinal axis of said opening.-
2. A device of the class described co1'n-' prising a body member havingan opening therethrough through which a tube or, the
like to be covered may be passed, the device having a pair of screw pockets ar -ranged one at each side of said, opening.
screws within said pockets, and a die hav- 1ng an opening arranged 1n allnement with the first opening and being shaped to rc- -from, means whereby covering material ceive material from .both of said screw pockets, Q
3. A device of the class described comprising a body member having an opening therethrough throughwhich a tube or the like to which'a covering is .to be applied, may be passed, the body member having a second opening through which covering material may be fed, means whereby material from the second opening may be directed into position forapplication to the tube, and agitator means for said material adjacent to the point of application. f
4. A deviceof the class described comprising a body member having an opening therethrough through which a tube or the like to which covering is to beapplied may be assed, the body member havinga second? open ng arranged in divergent relationv to the first opening thrdugh which covering material may be fed, said second opening constituting ascrew pocket, a screw rotatably mounted within said pocket adapted. for forcing covering material therefrom said screw pocket may be directed into position for application to the tube, and said screw constituting an agitator means for said material adjacent to the point of. application. o
5. A device, of the class. described comprising a body member having an opening therethrough through which a tube or the like to which covering isto applied may be passed, the bodymember having a pair of other openings formed therein arranged in divergent relation to the first opening, through which covering material may be fed, said second openings constituting screw pockets a screw rotatably mounted within each of said pockets adapted for forcing covering material therefrom, means wherebycovering materiai from said screw pockets collectively may be directed into position for application to the tube, and
, terial therefrom, means whereby covering material from said two screw pockets are directed toward the respective sides of the passing tube, and said screws terminating in close proximity to the point of application ofthe covering material to the tube.
Y. A device of the class described comprisi'ng a body part and a head part, each of said parts having openings therethreugh through which a tube or the'like to be covered may be passed, the body part having a plurality of screw pockets formed therein, screws one arranged in each of said screw pockets adapted for forcing covering material from said pockets, and the head part having a part shaped to embrace the discharge openings of all of said screw pockets 10 and to direct the covering material from said pockets intocovering position.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
