Description
Patented Aug. 26, 1924.
UNITED STATES BYRON H. DURHAM, OF MULLIKEN, MICHIGAN.
TOOL.
Application filed July 14,
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BYRON H. DURHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mulliken, in the county of Eaton and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a tool, the general object of the invention being to provide a combined caliper and gage for facilitating the grinding of bits.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail,
reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the device.
Figure 2 is a view of the opposite side thereof.
Figure 3 is an edge view.
Figure 4 is a view of the body part.
Figure 5 is a view of the movable part.
Figurefi is a View showing how the device is used.
Figure 7 is a sectional detail View.
In these views 1 indicates the body part of the device which has one end enlarged, as shown at 2, in which is formed the substantially V-shaped recess 3 and the slot 4. A projection 5 is formed on the enlarged part and extends into the recess and forms a stationary jaw. The movable part consists of shank 6 and a head 7, said head being provided with the jaw 8 for cooperating with the jaw 5 and at the other side the head is provided with a Vshaped recess 9 which acts as a gage for the end of the bit, as shown in Figure 6. The shank 6 passes through the 1923. Serial No. 651,677.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the tool acts as a combined caliper and gage for grinding drills and the like and Figure 6 shows how the tool is used to caliper any sized drill and then when the movable member is locked by the nut the gage will be in a position for indicating when both lips of the drill have been ground to the same length.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is A tool of the class described comprising a body having an enlarged part having a slot therein and a substantially V-shaped recess, a projection on the body extending into the recess and forming a stationary jaw, a movable member comprising a shank and a head, said shank engaging said slot and having a scale thereon and the head forming at one side a jaw for cooperating with the first mentioned jaw and having a recess on the opposite side of substantially V-shape and forming a gage and a bolt for locking the movable member 1n ad usted posltlon.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
BYRON H. DURHAM.
