Be it known that 1, DAVID M. J. WALL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Pipe Reamenof which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to cleaning devices and has particular reference to a reamer for cleaning the bowls of tobacco pipes.

in the use of tobacco pipes, it is well known that a crust accumulates within the bowl, due to the adherence thereto of certain particles of the tobacco, and this crust or formation is very diilicult to without the aid of particularly adapted for the purpose.

The invention, therefore, contemplates and aims primarily to produce a highly efficient, comparatively simple and inexpensive reamer which is designed especially for this purpose. 7

Another object of the invention is to provide a reamer of the character described which will not mutilate the bowl or injure it to such an extent as to increase the likelihood of the bowl to burn out.

A further object of the invention is to provide a reamer of the character described which is practically indestructible and which leaves the bore of the bowl of substantially the same diameter after constant use.

With the above recited and other objects in view, some of which will appear hereafter, reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application and in which- Figure 1 is a fra mentary sectional view through the bowl 0 a pipe, illustrating the manner in which the reamer is used. I

Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view taken approximately on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.

Fig. 4c is a sectionalview through the reamer taken approximately on; the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.

Figs. 5 and 6 are diagrammatic views of the blanks of the sections which constitute the reamer, and illustrating the relative arterial. Each of the blanks includes a handle portion 12 of elliptical or any other suitable formation adapted to be arranged in confronting relation when the blanks are assembled to form the reamer. Each handle portion is provided at itsopposite ends with a tongue 13 and a notch 14:, the tongue of one section being adapted to engage the notch or the other section to secure the sections against relative separation.

Each of the blanks is further provided with a blade portion 15 of a contour corresponding to the cross section of the bowl of a pipe and the side edges of the same are provided with serrations 16, the outer edges being flattened as at 17, as illustrated in Figures 5 and 6, it will be noted that the flattened outer edges of the serrations are disposed out oi vertical alignment and the arrangement is such that upon rotating the reamer, the entire bore of the bowl of a pipe will be acted upon by the flattened portion of the serrations.

The blade portion of each blank is bent along its longitudinal center, preferably at a right angle, whereby when the blanks are placed together to form the reamer, four blades radiating from a common center are provided, as clearly illustrated in Figures 2 and 3.

The blade portion is connected to the handle portion by a narrow neck portion 18 and the lower extremity of one blade portion is provided with a bendable tongue 19 which inter-engages a notch 20 of the other blade portion to retain the blade portions of the blanksin assembled relation under such stress or strain as would ordinarily be put upon the reamer. The tongue 19, however, is made very narrow and the recess' 20 very shallow, as shown in Figures 5 and 6, so that any excessive strain, such as might be produced by contact with an obstruction or irregularity in the pipe bowl, will cause the blades to twist. and separate before such force is exerted against the pipe bowl as would belikely to disrupt'thesame.

From this arrangement it will be'seen that a simple and inexpensive, yet highlyefficient and practically indestructible reamer is provided which will coact with the bore of the pipe bowlfor cleaning and removing foreign substances which adhere to the sides of the same. If'desired, the sections 10 and 11 may be formed integral and adapted to be bent upon themselves or secured in any other manner than the illustrated adaptation.

While there has been shown and described a single and preferred embodiment of the invention, no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details as it is to be understood that variations and modifications which properly fall within the scope of the appended claims may be resorted to when found expedient.

I claim:

1. In a pipe reamer which includes a pair of sections each of which comprises a shank of V-shaped formation in cross section having the apices thereof in contact to provide radially projecting blades, of a connection between the shanks at one end which permits of a relative separation thereof under a predetermined twisting strain.

2. As a new article of manufacture, a pipe reamer including a pair of sections each comprising a fiat handle portion and a shank portion bent along its longitudinal center to provide blades projecting at substantially a 45 angle with respect to each other, and a connection between said sections serving to hold thehandle portions in flat contact and the juncture .of the blades in flat contact whereby to permit of relative separation of the shanks of the sections .under a predetermined twisting strain.

3. A reamer for smoking pipes compris ing a pair of contiguously arranged sections each including a flat handle and a shank of V-shaped cross sectional configuration which defines radially projecting blades, the

said shanks at their free ends having a connection which permits of the twisting and relative separation thereof under a predetermined strain whereby to prevent the breaking of the bowl of a pipe.

4. A reamer for smoking pipes comprising a pair of oontiguously arranged sections each including a flat handle and a shank of V-shaped cross sectional configuration which define radially projecting blades, the said shanks at their free ends having a connection which permits of the twisting and relative separation thereof under a predetermined strain whereby to prevent the breaking of the bowl of a pipe, said connection consisting of a notch at the free end of one of the shanks, and a bendable tongue at the free end of the other shank engaging in said notch.

5. As a new article of manufacture, a reamer for tobacco pipe bowls comprising a pair of substantially similar blanks of sheet material, each bent for a portion of its length along the longitudinal center to approximately right angular cross-section,

/ and means for securing said blanks together by the apices of their angular portions whereby to produce a blade structure of decussated cross section.

6. As a new article of manufacture, a reamer for tobacco pipe bowls, comprising a pair of substantially similar laminose members, each with a fiat handle portion and an aiigulated blade portion, and means for securing said handle portions inparallel relation and said blade portions in radial relation.
