UNITED STATES JOI-IN I-I. WEAVER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
ASH DISPOSAL.
Application led December 7, 1920. Serial No. 428,869.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that l, JOHN H. WEAVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Ash Disposal, of which the following is a specication.
The invention relates primarily to ash disposal in connection with means for controlling the dust arising therefrom.
The object is to provide, in connection with furnace draft controlling means, means whereby the ashes or other dust containing substancemay be removed from t-he stove or furnace and deposited into a suitable containerand the dust usually arising therefrom, controlled and conveyed away to the flue of the stove or furnace. In other words, the object is to provide a convenient place of deposit for the ashes and, at the same time, utilizing by means of a special furnace draft control, the pneumatic pressure of the draft in the chimney Hue for carrying away the volatile part of the ashes. or the dust that arises as a result of the disturbance of the ashes,
The invention comprises convenient means whereby the draft may be utilized for the dust control, without impairing the draft of the furnace or stove. except when the ashes are actually being shifted or disturbed.
The invention -Icomprises means whereby the means controlling the pnuematic pressures in the dust area, also provide efficient and convenient means for regulatingfthe fire in the furnace or stove.
The invention comprises means for accurately indicating the condition of the draft with respect to the furnace or stove.
The invention comprises convenient means whereby the ashes may be sifted in a partly confined space and within the influence of thedraft, or the below-atmospheric pressure caused thereby, so that the dust resulting from said sifting is caried away.
My invention also comprises improvements in the special construction and arrangementI of the means for securing the above result.
Referring to the drawings which illustrate merely by way of eXmaple a suitable embodiment of my invention Fig. 1 is a front elevation.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The casing or chamber forming body 5, comprises the slightly tapered approximately cylindrical part 6 and the top portion 7 having upwardly inclined walls and provided at its top central portion with the flange 8 into which is fitted a collar or section of pipe 9 adapted to be connected by means of a. suitable conductor, not shown, to the chimney flue of a stove or heater. The cylindrical part 6 is provided in its lower half with the large opening 10, and the hinged closure or door 11. Above the opening and door l1, is a smaller opening 12, which is usually not provided with a closure. This opening' 12 is shown with an arched upper wall 13.
At the bottom of the collar or pipe section 9 is provided the damper member 14, secured to the lever 15, with a slight play, by the loosely litting screw 16. Lever 15 is secured, against rotation, to the shaft 17 by means of the set-screw 18. Shaft 17 is journalled in the block 19 and the bearing formed in the box 20, both journal bearings secured to the top 7, of the casing 5. To one end of shaft 17 is secured the operating handie 2l, locked in position of proper adjustment by the set-screw 22. This handle member 2l is preferably provided with a sectorshaped formation 23 having' notches 24: and suitable indication marks to show the position of the damper 14." The notches 24 are adapted to cooperate with the spring member 25 secured to the top of the boX 20, and adapted to maintain the damper operating handle in any desired position of arbitrary adjustment.
In the body ofthe casing wall 6 are provided suitable recesses or ledge-forming elements, as at 26, for supporting one end each of a pair of horizontal supporting members 27. The other ends of these members 27 are adapted to rest on the upper edge of the door or closure 11, preferably in slight recesses 28, to prevent lateral displacement.
The members are also provided with suitable shoulders 29, or other suitable device for engaging the walls of the casing and thereby preventing longitudinal displacement of the said members.
The members 27 are provided to support the sieve member 30, which may consist of an open frame with a screen bottom, and suitable flanges 31 for maintaining the frame upon the members 27. The dimensions of the sieve member 30 are such as to f then closed.
permit horizontal movement of same within the casing or chamber 5. And' hence, the sieve is supported on the members 27 so that it may be reciprocated thereon. rlhe handle 32 is connected with sieve 30 for the manual operation of the same.
in operation, the collar or pipe section 9 is connected either directly or the line; that is, it may have a pipe running directly' trom the collar 9 to the tiue in the chimney, or `it may vbefconnected to the smoke pipe leading from the heater or furnace to the flue.
The purpose of the opening l0 controlled by door ll, is to admit into the chamber ot the casing 5.a suitable box, tub or other container for the ashes. The door ll is l/Vhen it is desired to deposit ashes. into container, the damper lll is opened establishing communication between the chimney lue andr the chamber. The ashes or` other dust laden material are introduced through the opening l2, into said container and the dust arising there-trom is carried oil through pipe 9 to the chimney flue. v
In case it is desired to 'sift the ashes before depositing the same in the container,l the sitter BO is used, resting upon the slides or members 27. lt will be noted that the top of the sieve or sitter 30' extends only a. sligth distance above the bottom 'or opening 'l2 so that vthe ashes may Vreadily be shoveled into the sieve or sitter through said opening. 'the vsitter is agitated or reciprocated by means of the handle32 and the dust arising therefrom is carried oli as above described. The sieve 30 is readily inserted into and withdrawn from the chamber through the opening 12.
The. damper control is especially useful when the chambered body is connected with the flue or the smoke pipe oft a stove or heater;v in which case the damper lll may readily be set to check or increase the draft or the stove or heater as desired'. The position of th-e damper 'is indicated at all times by the position of the end oit spring 25, cooperating with the notches 2ll,-with respect to the indications or marks on the face or' the sector-dial 23. rlhe required position or' the damper is only disturbed, ifa-t1 all,
indirectly. to
when sitting or 'depositing ashes or .other Y material in the receptacle. i
Immediately after the conclusion of such operation, the damper 11i Vis again set in the position desired, with respect tothe condition of the tire and the temperature required.
yThe advantage of making the cylindrical chamber forming body slightly. tapering is to permit the nesting of several such structures for purposes of transportation.
rEhe device is extremely simple, compact, neat and efficient, and contributes greatly to maintaining cleanliness in the house or apartment where it is used. .Italso provides convenient means v:for further control of the tire.
