Description

E. Hump.
, Bread-Slicers. `N0,I50,635,` Patented May 5, 1874.

UNITED STATES EUGENE TRUMP, OF SPRINGFIELD, OHIO.
PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BREAD-SLICERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,635, dated May 5, 1874; application led March 5, 1874.
To all whom t may concern.:
Be it known that I, EUGENE TRUMP, of Springfield, in the county of Clarke and State of Ohio, have invented certain Improvements in Bread-Slicers, of which the following is a specification This invention relates to that class of breadslicers in which the loaf, placed in a reciprocating box or sash, is cut into slices by a knife arranged obliquely across the bed or frame on which the box or sash is moved back and forth. lVIy improvement consists in the provision of a reciprocating "knife in lieu of the ordinary stationary one.
In the annexed drawings, Figure l is a plan view of my improved breadslicer, part of the sash having been broken away to show a portion of one of its wedges, which impart a reciprocating motion to the knife. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the bed and knife without the sash. Fig. 3 is a side elevation, partly in sec tion. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 5 illustrates one of the sectional knife-guides.
The same letters of reference are used in all the ligures in the designation of identical parts.
The bedv or frame A is provided with the upwardly-projectin g parallel longitudinal rails a c, upon which the box or sash B moves. Upon the under side of the side bars of the sash wedges O O are secured, pointing in opposite directions. The inner sides of these wedges move along the outer sides of the rails a, and their inclined outer sides travel in contact with the projections d d at the respective ends -of the obliquely-arranged knife D, and thus impart a reciprocating motion to the same.
it has at each end wedge-shaped projections c on the under side, resting on inclines a on the bed, as shown in Fig. 3, and it is capable of being moved longitudinally, to raise or lower j it, by a Screw, F, turning in a nut, f, inserted in a recess in the bottom board, the screw being prevented from moving endwise by a plate, f', on the bed, which encircles a reduced portion of the screw. An offset is made in the upper surface of the bottom board, making the portion back of the cutting-edge of the knife lower than that in front of it, to facilitate the clearance of the slices and their discharge. The knife moves in metallic guides, composed of' plates G and G', and secured to the rails of the bed or frame A.
That I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent isl. The combination of the reciprocating box or sash B and obliquely-reciprocating`knife D, substantially as specified.
2. The oblique knife D, having projections d cl on its respective ends, and the reciprocat ing box or sash B, carrying wedges C C, arranged as stated, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing -witnesses.
