RAILROAD TIE.
Application filed October 15, 1923. Serial No. 668,750.
To all whom itmag concern: I
Be it known that I, ARTHUR T. Boner-r, a citizen of the United States, residing at McGees Mills, in the county of Clearfield and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railroad Ties, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a railroad tie and has for its principal object to provide means in combination with a tie. for securing rails thereto. a
The invention aims to provide a simple and eflicient means whereby the tie may be secured to the rails without the necessity of using spikes and the like.
Another ob 'ect of the invention is to provide a device of this nature havinga simple and efiicient construction, one which is reliable, easy to manipulate, durable, and well adapted for the purpose designed.
With the above and numerous other objects in view, which will appear asthe description proceeds, the invention resides in the novel features of construction and in the combination and arrangement. of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the tie embodying my invention;
Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary longitudinal section therethrough; and
Figure 4 is a transverse section taken substantially on the line 4c i of Figure 8.
Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that the tie is provided with a body 1 of elongated box-like construction. A pair of fixed clamp members 2 are disposed on the upper side of the body 1 adj acent the ends thereof. A pair of tenons 3 are disposed on the upper side of the body 1 between the fixed clamp members 2 and in spaced relation thereto and to each other. A pair of slidable clamp members 4: are constructed with grooves for receiving the tenons 3. These tenons 3 are preferably trapezoidal in cross section and the grooves conform in shape thereto so that there is a dove-tail slidable connection between the body 1 of the tie and the movableor slidable members 4:. A pair of links 7 are disposed between the adjacent ends of the slidable members 4:, One link 7 is pivoted to each member i. The links are pivoted to gether and thus when the links are lifted at the point where they are pivoted together theslidable jaws 4 will move away from the fixed member 2 whereas when the pivot points of the links where they are connected together are forced downwardly these slidable members will move toward the fixed members 3. The members i are so shaped as to engage the base of therails 8. Any suitable means may be used for hold ing the links 7 downwardly on the tie body.
The tie can be constructed of metal and thus will be durable havinga great length of life. 'It will be furthermore seen thatthe rails may be readily disengaged therefrom when it is necessary to renew or repair them. I I
While the preferred embodiment of the railroad tie has been described in detail, it
- will be understood that I do not wish to be limited to the particular construction set forth, since various changes in the forms, materials and proportions, and arrangement of parts and'in the details of construction maybe resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope'of the invention. or I sacrificing any of its advantages.
What is claimed 1s:
1. A railroad tie of the class described invided on the body,a pair of tenons disposed between the fixed jaws on the body of dovetail formation, a pair of slidable jaws provided. with dove-tailed mortises for receiving the tenons, and a pair of links one piv oted' to each movable jaw and pivoted at adjacent ends to each other whereby the .105
latter pivoted ends may be raised and 1owered for moving the movable jaws away from and toward the fixed jaws all in the manner and forthe purpose specified.
3. A railroad tie of the class oescrlb'ed including abody, fixed clamp members on may not be lifted from engagement with-- the body but move longitudinally thereof toward and away from the fixed clamp members, and a pair of links one pivoted to each slidable clamp member, said links pivoted together and adapted to lie flat on the body so as to hold the slidable clamp-members in operative association with the fixed clamp members so that rails may be held therebetween and so that the adjacent ends of the links may be lifted causing the slidable clamp members to move toward each 15 other and away from the fixed clamp members for releasing the rails.
In testimony whereof I atfix' my signa- W. "W. MCQUOWN, CECIL C. WOLFE.
