K. F. LEES COMBINED ASH TRAY AND MATCH BOX HOLDER Filed May 15 1922 Patented Aug. 19, 1 924.
STATES KENNETH F. LEES, NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
COMBINED ASH TRAY AND MATCH-BOX HOLDEB.
Application filed May 15, 1922. Serial No. 560,946.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KENNETH F. LEES, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new a and useful Improvement in Combined Ash Trays and Match-Box Holders; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in-
Fig. 1 a plan view of a combined ash-tray and match-box holder, constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 a side view of the same, showing the device as applied to a horizontal support.
Fig. 3 a broken, vertical, sectional view of the same.
Fig. 4 a sectional view on the line'4-4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 a plan view, on a reduced scale, showing the device applied to a vertical I support.
' particularly recited in the claims.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a cup-like container 10 having two flat sides 11 and 12. To one side a safety-match-box holder 13 is secured by rivets 14, this holder being of usual construction, including a foot 15, upon which the bottom of the box rests, and with openings 16 on opposite sides, through which the abrading sides of the box are exposed. Upon the top of the con. tainer is a cover 17, formed with a central opening 18 through which ashes may pass to the container, and on one side of the cover is a support 19 for a cigar or cigarette. The fiat side 12 is formed with a'hub 20, against which is placed a yoke 21, which is adjustably connected with the container by a rivet 22, the ends of which are upset over washers 23 and 24. The point of connection between the container and yoke is at one side of the center of the yoke, so that one end of the yoke projects beyond the container. Between the ends of the yoke is a'tube 25, at the lower end of which are fingers 26 which extend downward through a washer 27 through the end 28 of the yoke and through a washer 29, over which the ends of the fingers are turned so as to frictionally'interlock the lower end of the tube with the yoke. The upper end of the tube is formed with fingers 30 which, with the end of the tube, extend through the end 31 of the yoke, and the fingers extend through slots in a clamparm 32, over which the ends of the fingers are turned, so as tosecure the clam -arm to the tube. Passing through an angu ar opendisk 32 and the end 31 of the yoke is a spring 35. The upper end of the shaft passes through an adjustable clamp-plate 36, the end 37 of which is coiled to form a handle, the end setting over the end 38 of the shaft 33, which is squared and upset within the ring, so as to firmly hold the adjustable clamp-plate 36, and the angular shaft prevents the clamp-plate 36 from turning with respect to the clamp-plate 32.
The clamp- plates 32 and 36 are prefer-' ably, provided with pads 39 on their inner faces. By pulling the post 33 outward, the clamp-plates are separated so that they may be passed over the edge of a table, around a bed-post, or any other support to which the device is to be attached.
As shown in Figs- 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings, the device is represented as attached to the edge of a table, so that the container stands below the table beneath which it may be turned, as the yoke is free to turn on the tube 25, and clearance is provided a box of matches; or the clamp may be reversed in position and the container rotated, so as to stand above the top of a table; or, if the device is attached to a vertically-arranged support 40, as shown in Fig. 5, the container is turned on the yoke so as to be in proper position to receive ash es. The device, thus constructed, is simplefland; consequently, can be produced at low cost' and provides a combined ash-tray and match-box holder which I may be applied to a support, whether horizontal, vertical or inclined, and the yoke is in such frictional en agement with the sleeve that the parts will %)e held in any position to which they may be .turned.
I claim:
1. A combined ash-tray and match-holder, comprising a container, a yoke having a central portion and two ends, the container pivotally connected with the central portion between the said ends and clamping means with which the two ends of the yoke are pivotally connected.
2. A combined ash-tray andmatch-box holder, comprising a container, a yoke to which the container is pivotally connected, 2. tube between the ends of'the yoke and upon which the yoke may turn, a clamping-plate connected with one end of said tube and having an angular hole, an angular shaft passing through said angular hole and entering said tube, an adjustable clamping-plate connected with said shaft, and a spring on said shaft and tending to draw it into the said tube.
3. A combined ash-tray and match-box holder, comprising a container, a yoke to which the container is pivotally connected, a tube between the ends of the yoke and upon which the yoke may turn, a clamping-plate connected with one end of said tube, a shaft entering said tube, an adjustable clampingplate connected with said shaft, and a spring on said shaft and tending to draw it into the said tube.
4. A combined ash-tray and match-box holder, comprising a container, a cover for said container formed with an opening, a yoke with which said container is pivotally connected, a sleeve between the ends of said yoke upon which the said yoke, may turn, said sleeve formed at opposite ends with fin- ,gers, a fixed clamping-plate secured to one -end of the tube by the fingers of the said sleeve, a shaft entering said sleeve, an adjustable clamping-plate connected with said shaft and formed with a handle and a spring in said sleeve and tending to draw the ad justable plate toward the fixed clampingplate.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
KENNETH F. LEES. Witnesses:
