My invention relates to loading machines for logging and particularly to the portable type of such machine.
My invention will be better understood by reference to the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, and in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a machine embodying my invention. I

Referring to the drawings, the platform 1 is placed astride the track 2 and is wider than the track and carries the necessary machinery for hauling and loading logs. The platform is supported by four logs 3, and the platform is wide enough to permit the logs to be placed far enough awayfrom the track to permit the cars 1 upon which the logs are to be loaded to pass underneath the platform, as shown in Fig. 2.
The car 4: may be used for transporting the platform and is provided with members 5 which co-operate with members 6 on the platform for holding the platform in place,
on the car.
The apparatus or machinery which is placed on the platform may be of any desired form as that machinery does not constitute any part of my present invention. The machinery has been shown in the drawings in a diagrammatic manner and includes an engine 7., a mast 8, a boom 9, and the necessary cables for handling the logs.
The means for adjusting and holding the platform in position are shown in detail in Figs. 3 and 41 and will now be described. Four jacks are attached to the platform and each jack comprises a cylinder 10 and a plunger 11. A footing 12 is attached to the plunger 11 and blocks 13 are secured to the footing 12, a plate 1 1 is rigidly secured to the jack cylinder 10 and is bolted to the side frame of the platform by bolts 15. pivotally connected with. the plate 1 1 and are arranged to rotate around the pivot pin 17, through an angle of 180. hen in the position shown in Fig. 3, pins 18 hold the plates in the positions shown and when in the positions shown in Fig 1, similar pins hold the plates in the positions shown.
When it is desired to elevate the platform,
the same is transported to the desired position and timbers 20 are placed in positionv to form a foundation for the footings 12. The jacks which may be hydraulic are then operated and the platform elevated. When this operation begins the parts are in the positions shown in Fig. 3, that is to say, the jack plungers are all the way in the cylinders and the plates 16 are in the positions shown in Fig. 3. The jacks are operated and the platform elevated and the plates 16 are then swung around the pins 17 to the positions shown in Fig. 4 so that the lower edges of theplates 16 are above the members 13. The distance between the lower edges of the plates 16 and the upper surface of the members 13 may be filled in with the shimming boards 21, if desired. The platform, together with the plates 16, then lowered so that the plates 16 rest upon the Plates 16 are I boards 21 and the platform is thus held in an adjusted position. Bythe arrangements shown the platform may be leveled, although the foundations upon which the footings rest may notbe of the same height. This adjustment is secured by the use of the shimming boards 21. The jacks should be attached to the platform in such a manner as to be in the highest possible position when the platform is being transported so that the jacks and their footings will. not be damaged when the platform is being trans ported through cuts along the railway track.
My invention has many advantages, among which may be mentioned that the device is simple and is easily operated; means are provided for readily transporting the platform from place to place and simple and effective means are provided for adjusting the platform and holding the same in the adjusted positions, together with means for leveling the platform under all conditions.
While I have shown one embodiment of my invention and have described the same in detail, I wish it to be understood. that I am not limited to the exact arrangements shown and described, as many changes may be made in the details thereof, without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim:
1. Logging apparatus, comprising a portable platform, loading machinery carried thereby, means for supporting said platform comprising adjustable means, and means pivotally attached to the platform for holding the platform in adjustable position i11- dependent of said adjustable means.
2. Logging apparatus, comprising a portable platform, loading machinery carried thereby and'means for supporting said platform, comprising hydraulic jacks fastened to said platform and means pivoted to said platform and adapted to be moved into position to support said platform in adjusted position.
3. Means for supporting a portable platform, comprising jacks attached thereto,
,footings for said jacks and means attached to said platform adapted to be moved into position to support said platform in a plurality of adjusted positions.
4. Means for supporting a portable platform comprising a jack having one part attached to the platform, a footing for the other part of the jack and means on the platform adapted to be placed between the footing and a rigid part of the platform to hold the platform in adjusted position.
5. A 'ack comprising a cylinder and a piston, a plate attached to the jack and adapted to connect the jack to the device with which the jack is to be used, and a member con nected with the device and adapted to be moved into position to hold the device in adjusted position,
6. Logging apparatus, comprising a portable platform, loading maehinery carried thereby and means for supporting said platform, comprising hydraulic jacks fastened to said platform and legs pivoted to said platform and adapted to be moved into position to support said platform in adjusted position.
7. Logging apparatus, comprising a portable platform, loading machinery carried thereby and means for supporting said platform, comprising hydraulic jacks fastened to said platform and legs pivoted to said platform adjacent said jacks and movable horizontally into position to support said platform.
8. Logging apparatus, comprising a portable platform, loading machinery carried thereby and means for supporting said platform astride a trackway, comprising hydraulic jacks attached to said platform at a substantial distance outside said trackway and legs carried by the platform and arranged to be moved into position to support the platform independently of the jacks.
9. Logging apparatus, comprising a frame, loading machinery carried thereby and means for raising said frame, comprising jacks attached to the side of said frame and legs pivotally mounted on said frame and arranged to be moved into position to supkport said frame independently of the ac s.
10. Logging apparatus, comprising a frame, loading machinery carried thereby and means for raising said frame, comprising jacks attached to the side of said frame and legs pivotally mounted on said frame, and arranged to be moved into position to support said frame independently of the jacks, and means for holding said legs in both positions.
