In the illustrated em odiment 'of the invention a frame l' which may be formed of any suitable material, such as'sheet metal, is provided on opposite sides with inturned peripheral flanges 2 which extend parallel withthe same face of. the frame so as to providewith the face of the frame, internal oppositely-facing longitudinally extending ooves. These grooves along o posite sides of the frame are utilized as gui eways for supporting the card-supports 3 for bodily sliding movement along the frame, one of the supports being shown separately in Figure 2. An elongated, fiat strip 4 of sheet metal has its ends 5 rolled backwardly thereon, upon the same face of the strip, so as to Aform enlarged ends which serve as bearings when the support slides in the guideways of the frame with the flat face of the strip parallel with the face of the frame. The card-supports normally abut against one another, edge toedge, and the enlarged terminals at the ends prevent one carrier from overlapping the other when th frame is tilted or carried about. A wire 6 is disposed upon one face of the strip 4, along an and integral tongues 7 extending from the edge of the strip 4 aloner which the wire is disposed are rolled, turned, or otherwise formed around the wire so as to effectively secure it to the face of the strip. The corners of the inturned ends of the strip are notched, as at 8, so as to allow the ends of the wire to extend into and be concealed within the rolled or enlarged ends of the strip 4.
An elongated strip 9 of sheet metal has its opposite edges turned back thereon towardy one another on the same face of the strip, and disposedin spaced relation to the face of the strip. A holding member 15 is provided with extensions 16 which proect into the guideways in which the car -supports slide, so as to' secure the holding memberA to the frame with provision for adjustment along the same in the direction of adjustment of the card supports. Astrip 17 of suitable flexible material, such as fabric or spring steel, preferably .the latter, is anchored at its ends to the ends of the frame and extends lengthwise along the face of the frame beneath the card-su ports, The strip passes through paralle apertures 18 in the holding member 15, preferabl entering and leaving the member from t e linder face thereof so that as the member is adjusted along the frame, it will; be frictionally held in any adjusted position. The holding member is shifted along the guideways to through the s acev hold the card-supports together and against one end of the frame, and is adjustable for the purpose of allowing the insertion of additional card-supports between the Y guide- Waysor for crowding the remaining card supports together after some have 'been removed from the frame.

The wire 6 is standard stock material, andthe strips 4 and 9 can be stamped to the desired sizel and shape from ordinary sheet metal, and formed by dies into the desired shape and in the desired assembly, in a manner well known in the sheet metal working art. The card support, when complete, is thin so that an index device utilizing Athem may be .made very thin. The support is also light in weight, durable, and because of its manufacture by stamping and die-forming methods, the cost of manufacture is relatively small.
It will be obvious that various changes in the details and arrangements of parts herein described and illustrated for the purpose of explaining the nature of the invention, may be ma. e by those skilled in the art within the principle and sco e of the inf vent-ion, as expressed Fin t e appended claims.
I claim: f 1. In a visible index device, a member adapted to extend 4between and slide in spaced parallel guides, a wiresccured to t e member, a sheet metal hinge element having a portion thereof bent around the wire to provide a pivotal connection to the member and another portion bent upon itself to engage with and detachably hold an index card.
2. In a visible index device, an element adapted to ,extend between and slide in s aced parallel guides, a sheet metal hinge e ement having a portion' thereof bent around a portion of the sliding element to form a pivotal connection between the elements, said hin e element having means to dtachably hol an index card for movement therewith about the pivotal connection so as to expose to view either face of the card.

In a visible index device, an element adapted to extend between the slide in spaced parallel guides, a sheet metal hinge element having a portion" thereof alon an edge bent around a portion of the sli ing element to form a. pivotal connection between the elements, said hinge element having other :portions bent thereon to forni flanges extending towardone 4another in different planes to form opposing guides between which may be supported an index! card with a bentover edge by sliding the'l bent-over edge endwise between the flanges.
In a visible index device, an element adapted to extend between and slide in spaced parallel guides, a sheet metal hinge element having a portion thereof alon an edge bent around a portion of the sli ing element to form a pivotal connection between the elements, said hinge element hav` ing other portions bent thereon to .form flanges extending toward one another in different planes and overlapping for slidably rcceivin the bent-over edge of an index card which is inserted between the grooves endwise of the bent-over edge.
6. In a visible index device, an element adapted to extend between and slide in spaced parallel guides, a sheet metal hinge element hai-ing opposite longitudinal edges bent thereon toward one' another on the saine face-of the element to form opposing guide grooves iii which a bent-over edge of an index card may be removably secured, said hinge element also having a tongue extending frorn an edge thereoi beyond the flanges and formed around a portion of the sliding element to forni a hinge connection between the elements.
7. In a visible index device, an'elon ated strip of sheet metal ada ted to exten between arid slide in space parallel uides, a. wire extending along the upper ace an adjacent. one edge thereof, the strip having tongues extending from the said one edge and bent around the wire to anchor it thereto, and a hinge element pivotally mounted on the wire and adapted to removably support an index card.

In a visible index device, an elongated flat strip of sheet metal having its ends rolled over to` form .bearing ends, a wire extendin lalong the. face of the strip and'into the ro ed ends, tongues on the strip bent around the wire to secure'it thereto a flat sheet-metal hinge'eleme'nt having its len h wise edges doubled over toward one anot er on the same face .to form opposing grooves in which a bent-over edge of an index card may be removably supported by sliding the bentedge ndwise into the opposed grooves, and a ton` e inte ral with the hinge element, ext riding roina lengthwise edge thereof .beyond the bentLover portion of the edge, and turned around the wire to form an articulated connection thereto.
