This invention relates in general to drafting apparatus, and more particularly to apparatus for making graphs or charts.
One object of the invention is to provide apparatus of this character which shall embody novel and improved features of construction including a frame having a bed or board to receive paper or the like upon which the drawing or chart is to be drawn, two rulers or straight edges disposed in parallel planes with their straight edges at right angles to each other, and guideways in the frame for mounting and permitting sliding of the straight edges or rulers with respect to the frame and each other over the surface of the bed.
Other objects are to provide such an apparatus which shall include novel and improved guideways for mounting the straight edges or rulers whereby the latter shall be accurately maintained with their straight edges perpendicular to each other and may be easily and smoothly slid relative to each other and the drawing bed; to provide in such apparatus novel and improved roller mountings for the straight edges which shall be simple and inexpensive in construction and reliable and durable in operation; to provide in such apparatus novel and improved yielding tracks or guideways for the straight edges or rulers to reduce to the minimum the possibility of the straight edges or rulers becoming jammed during movement thereof and to maintain the straight edges in proper perpendicular relation to each other; and to obtain other advantages and results as will be brought out by the following description.
Referring to the accompanying drawings in which corresponding and like parts are designated throughout the several views by the same reference characters,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a drafting apparatus embodying our invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional View on an enlarged scale taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a horizontal sectional view on the same scale as shown in Figure 1 taken on the line 45 of Figure 2, looking toward the top of the apparatus.
Figure 5 is a similar view taken on the line i5 looking toward the bottom of the apparatus.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary plan view of one end of one of the rulers showing the roller mounting.
Figure '7 is an end View of the ruler with the rollers removed.
Figure 8 is a sectional View on the line 8-8 of Figure 6.
Figure 9 is a view similar to Figure 6 showing one of the yielding tracks and a modification of the roller mounting.

Figure 11 is a sectional view on the line ll-l l of Figure 9.
Specifically describing the invention the apparatus includes a frame having a rectangular bottom section or bed I with an upstanding rib 2 extending around two sides and one end thereof, the height of the rib being greater than that of the thickness of a sheet of paper or the like upon which a drawing or chart is to be made.
A top section is secured by screws 2 on the bottom section and includes side pieces 3, one running along each side of the frame in superposed relation to the corresponding portion of the rib 2 on the bottom section. Each side piece 3 is formed with a rabbet 4 which with the juxtaposed portion of the rib 2 forms a channel guideway for one end of a straight edge or ruler 5 which extends transversely of the frame in a plane parallel with the plane of the bed.
As shown, the ruler 5 comprises an approximately straight piece of material, preferably Celluloid, Bakelite wood, or metal, and at each end has a cross-head 6 in which are mounted rollers l. The rollers l are spaced transversely of the end of the ruler equidistantly at opposite sides of the longitudinal median line of the ruler and with their axes perpendicular to the plane of the ruler, and are disposed wholly within the channel guideway.
The cross-head 6 has a notch 8 opening through the edge thereof to receive each roller 1, and each roller has end flanges 9 which span and embrace the cross-head as shown in Figures 3 and 6. Preferably the length of the rollers is equal to the thickness of the ruler and crosshead and accordingly the cross-head has recesses or cut-away portions I!) to form clearances for the flanges?! of the rollers.
The guideways are parallel to each other and to the plane of the bed with their channels facing each other, and one guideway has a rigid track H for the corresponding rollers, while the other guideway has a yielding track l2 Which is shown in the form of a bar movable in a plane parallel to the plane of the ruler and yieldingly held in contact with the rollers by suitable springs I3 disposed in the guideway 4 at spaced points in the length of the track bar I2.

With this construction, it will be observed that the ruler 5 may be freely slid in its own plane longitudinally of the frame in a plane parallel with the plane of the bed, the rollers l freely rolling along the tracks II and I2. The yielding track bar I2 ensures against jamming of the ruler as it is slid and also restrains the ruler from twisting or turning action in its own plane.
Above the ruler 5 in the top section is mounted another ruler I4, identical in construction with the ruler 5, having its ends disposed in channel guideways l5 and Hi the latter of which has a yielding track bar I! substantially identical in structure and operation with the track bar 12. The guideways l5 and I6 are in superposed relation to the guideways 4 at the same side of the bed and disposed perpendicularly to the guideways 4 of the ruler 5 with their channels facing each other so that the ruler I4 has its edges perpendicular to the edges of the ruler 5. In this ,way, the two rulers may be slid in their own planes relatively to each other and to the frame so that horizontal and vertical lines at right angles to each other may be made with the aid of the edges of the two rulers at various points over the surface of the bed I.
In use of the apparatus, a sheet of paper upon which a drawing or chart is to be made is inserted upon the bed I into the space l8 formed by the rib 2 between the top section and the bottom section. As above described, the rib 2 extends around only two sides and one end of the bed which leaves an opening I!) at one end of the bed for the insertion and removal of the sheet.
If desired, the top section of the frame may have an extension 20 beyond one end of the ruler l4 provided with openings?! through which inscriptions along the edge of a printed chart or graph sheet may be viewed. Obviously these openings may be varied in number, size and location to accommodate difierent types of printed charts.
A modification of the roller mounting for the rulers is shown in Figure 9 where the cross-head 22 is a separate piece from the ruler inserted into a slot 2 3 in the end of the ruler. The cross-head is of a thickness corresponding to the distance between the flanges of the rollers and has the notches 2 corresponding to the notches 8 to receive the rollers,
Other modifications in the details of cons-truction of the apparatus will occur to those skilled in the art as within the scope of the invention and obviously the apparatus may be used for many different types of drafting and chart making.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. Apparatus of the character described comprising a frame having a bed, two pairs of channel guideways above said bed in planes parallel to each other and to the plane of the bed, the guideways of each pair being parallel to each other and at right angles to the guideways of the other pair, the guideways of each pair having a rigid track and a yielding track respectively, and a ruler mounted in each pair of guideways with its ends slidably abutting the rigid track and yielding track respectively.
2. Apparatus of the character-described comprising a frame having a bed, two pairs of channel guideways above said bed in planes parallel to each other and to the plane of the bed, the guideways of each pair being parallel to each other and at right angles to the guideways of the other pair, one guideway of each pair having a rigid track and the other guideway having a movable track bar, a ruler mounted in each pair of guideways with its endsslidably abutting the rigid track and said movable track bar respectively, and springs for yieldingly influencing said track bars into contact with the corresponding ends of said ruler.
3. Apparatus of the character described comprising a frame having a bed, two pairs of channel guideways above's'aid bed in planes parallel to each other and to the plane of the bed, the
guideways of each pair being parallel to each other and at right angles to the guideways of the other pair, and the channels, of each pair of guideways facing each other, a ruler having one end within the channel of each guideway, and a pair of rollers on each end of the ruler located wholly within and to run along the respective guideway and having their axes perpendicular to the plane of the ruler and spaced. equidistantly at opposite sides of the longitudinal median line of the ruler.
4. The-apparatus set forth in claim 3 wherein.
the ends of said ruler have notches opening through the edge thereof and said rollers are mounted in said notches and have end flanges spanning and embracing the end of the ruler..
5. Apparatus of the character described comprising a frame having a bed, two pairs of channel guideways in superposed relation at one side of said bed in planes parallel to each other and to the plane of the bed, the guideways of each pair being parallel 'to' each other and. at right angles to the guideways of the other pair "and the channels of each pair of guideways facing each other, and a rulermounted in each pair of guideways and comprising a strip of material having cross-heads at its ends slidable within the respective channels.
