To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BEDRI SAAB, a citizen of ria, residin at Yakima, in the county of lakima and tate of Washingtomhave invented new and useful Improvements in Check Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
1 My present invention pertains to devices for making checks and it contemplates the provision of means whereby through the use of this check makin device the numbers will not only be rea ily produced on a check but the maker of such check will be protected to the extent that once. the numbers have been produced the liability of erasing the numbers is effectually pre cluded.
The invention further contemplates the provision of a portable check rotector that will be readily and easily astened to a check-book and carried about on the person.
Further objects and advantageous characteristics of the invention will be fully un derstood from the following description and claims when the same are read in connection with the drawings accompanying and forming part of this application in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of a portion of the device with one of the plates removed therefrom.

My novel check printing device comprises two sections, the upper one of which is indicated by 1 andthe lower one of which is 2 and on one. side of't'lie sectionl I provide a stud 3 and on the lower section 2 and at the corresponding side to which the stud 3 is secured I arrange a lateral book 4 whereby when the two casings are brought together they will be held in said position by means of the hook and stud.

Arranged on and revoluble within the casing 1 is a knob 8 that is fixedly secured to the disk 9 that is provided with the peripheral notches 10 but successively ens of the disk to indicate one of the numerals the disk will betemporarily locked so as to prevent slipping of the disk during a printing operation.
On its inner side the casing is provided with an opening 11 throughwhich the numerals 12 appear. These numerals are the ones that cut or indicate the amount to be produced on a check and are preferably serrated as indicated by 12*.
On its upper side the casing 1 is provided with the sight opening 13 through which the small numerals 14 appear. It will be manifest that the disk is provided on one face with sight numerals 14 and on its 'ev a spring 11 whereby upon turning opposite face with printing numerals 12 and 7 it will also be apparent that these openings are out of registration with each other.
At its end adjacent the pintle 6 the easing 1 is provided with an ink pad 15 and although I have shown the pad as a fiat element I would have it distinctly understood that this padmay be eliminated and a roller substituted therefor; the purpose being to provide an inking surface that will the serrated surfaces 12 of engage or ink 12 during rotation of the the numerals disk 9.
Arranged so as to engage the numerals 12 when the casings 1 and 2 are brought to bear upon each other and positioned in the inner surface of the casing 2 is a metal portion or platen 16 having V-shaped grooves and at its end the-casing 2 is provided adjacent the portion 16 with a slot 17 having notches 18 that engage the ledge 19 of a lever 20 that is fulcrumed at 21 by means of a pin.
Secured to the inner end of the lever 20 is' a sliding check feeding element 22 and said sliding element is secured to the lever 20 by means of a pin 23. Aslot 24 is formed in the under surface of the casing 2 immediately below the in 23 and this slot is indicated by 24. T is provision is made in order that the sliding member will travel 'evenly in the opening 25 in which the sliding member operates. On its uppersurface the sliding member is provided with the prongs 26 that enga e the check C.
A plate 27 that is hinged on the pintle 7 bears against the upper surface of the check and springs 28 are adapted to depress the plate 27 so as to force the check firmly against the rongs but at the same time the tension of these springs-is such so as not to impede operation of the sliding member. A ledge 29 is formed on the easing 1 and this ledge coacts with the lip 30 of easing 2.
On its edges the plate or casing 2 is provided with serrations to hold the check from shifting during operation of the device.
In the practical use of the invention, the check is placed in the device as indicated in Figure 4 with the plate 27 bearing on the upper surface of the check and the prongs 26 hearing on the under surface of the check. The operator then turns the knob 8 to the desired numeral and merely presses downward or inother words brings the two casings 1 and 2 together. This immediately brings the numeral appearing at the sight opening so that it will bear upon the check surface at the point immediately above the portion or female die 16 of the casing 2. The casing 1 is then lifted slightly above so as not to bear on the check and the lever 20 is moved one notch which in turn moves the sliding element 22 that imparts movement in one direction to the check. The operator then turns the knob to the desired numeral and repeats the printing operation above indicated. Any number of printing operations may be accomplished and this Without moving the check in any other manner than through the lever 20.
The device is so constructed and arranged that it may readily be locked and carried with ease in the pocket of a person and is instantly ready for use and because of its compact construction it will manifestly take up but a very small amount of space.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-,Patcut is 1. Ina check printing device the combination of two hinged casmgs, a sight opening formed in one'of the casings on its upper surface and an opening formed in the said casing on its under surface; each of said openings being out of registration, a disk arranged in they casing and having numerals on both of its surfaces, peripheral notches formed in the disk, a spring having a tooth that en ages the notches, a pintle extending across time inner end of the first casing, lips formed on the pintle,an inking element arranged in the casing, a plate mounted on the .second casing, a bar fulcrumed in the *second casing and a slidable member arranged to travel in a channel formed in the second casingand having prongs on its upor surface and secured to the last named er, a ledge secured to the bar and notches for engaging the ledge formed in one end of the second casing and a platen secured on the inner face of the bottom casing; said casings being hinged one to the other.
2. In a check printing device the combi nation of an upper casing, a disk revoluble in the casing and having numerals thereon, an inking pad arranged to bear on the numerals, a second casing secured to the first casing, a plate secured to the hinging element of the casings, springs adapted to bear on the plate, a lever having a slidable check feeding member arranged on one end thereof, and a platen mounted on the second casing and adapted to receive and bear against the numerals.
3. In a check protector, the combination of two hinged casings; one of said casings having a sight opening on one surface and a printing opening on the opposite surface,
a disk movable in the casing and having I numerals arranged on both of its surfaces and adapted to travel over an inking surface, a lever formed in the second casing and movable independently thereof and having a slidable member operatable by the lever and adapted to engage a check, and
means for lightly bearing on one surface of the check to prevent shifting in endwise manner of the check during movement of the slidable member.

In a check writing and protecting device the combination of a casing, a sight opening formed in one surface and a printing opening formed in the opposite surface, a disk revoluble in the casing, numerals formed on the disk, notches formed on the disk, means for temporarily locking the disk with respect to the casing, means in the casing for inking the numerals, springs formed in the casing adjacent the inking element, a pintle extending across one end of the casing, a stud formed on the casing,
