IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING TABLES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,330, dated April 28, 1874 application filed October 2, 1873.

To all lwhom it may concern:

Be it known that we, JASPER E. LAMBIE, ROBERT M. LAMBIE, and PATRICK MUNDE, all of East Hampton, Hampshire county, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Im provements in Folding Tables, of which the following is a specification:

Our invention has for its object the construction of a light portable table, suitable for a work-table, the legs of which may be easily extended to alter its height, and may be readily folded against the top to enable the table to occupy little space when not in use or in course of transportation.

In the drawings, Figure I is a side View; Fig. II, a vertical cross-section; Fig. IH, a detail view, showing the slide, and Fig. IV shows the scale upon the top.

The legs B B are hinged beneath the top D, so as to be capable of swinging inwardly, and each is composed of the parts F G, the frame F being' hinged to the top at f j', and when swung out from the top, held at right angles to it by the Wing H, which is hung, also, to the top D, so as to be folded against it when not in use. The frame F serves as a track, upon which the part G, or legs proper, slide, an l the legs are held together and framed upon the track F by the round m and connection b, and when so held together tongues upon the sliding surfaces of the parts F G, fitting in corresponding grooves, permit the legs to be retracted or extended, the tongues c o also forming stops to prevent the legs from being drawn entirely oli', (this is shown in Fig. III.) Upon the lower part of the frame F we arrange the devices for securing the legs at the desired point of extension upon the frame G, one of which devices is a loop, K, hinged upon the frame F, and surrounding one leg, the outer surface of which is provided with notches c a a, &c., into any one of which the loop K is forced, as it comes opposite it, by means of a binding-spring, o, which also serves to retain the loop in position in the notch until removed manually; the other fastening being a hook, d, upon the part F, to catch a pin or staple upon the part G when the loop K shall have caught in a notch, the loop K and hook d securing both legs rinly.

The operator sitting at the table has only to release the hook and loop, and extend the legs to the desired height, when the loop is forced into a notch, and the hook being made fast, the table is firmly supported upon legs in the altered position.

The position and number of the notches c a a, &c., is a matter of convenience, it only being necessary that they correspond on bot-h legpieces G Gi The wings H H are hung beneath the tabletop D, to swing out from it in a direction at right angles to that in which the legs swing, and the free ends of the win gs, bearing against the side of the cross-pieces g g of the frames F F, securely brace the legs'. Stops t t are placed to limit the wings to 'a perpendicular swing.

Vhen it is desired to fold the legs, the wings are swung iiat against the top D, and the legs over them; all of the parts being thus capable of being swung iat against the top, and the table ofy being folded to occupy the smallest amount of space.

For the convenience of the worker at the table we combine with its top a scale, P, suitable for dress-makers, tailors, or draftsmen, which is either a scale let into the top ot' the table to present a iush surface thereto, or a scale marked or stamped upon the top itself.

By this construction we are able to provide a table exceedingly light and stron g, and possessing the advantages of being quickly adjusted to any height, and of being folded into small compass. f

Now, having described our invention, what we claim is The combination, with the top D, of the hinged frames F F, having the legs G G, tongued to slide upon their outside surfaces, and the hinged Win gs H H, having their ends received within the stops f f upon the crosspieces g g, as shown and described.
