UNITED j STATES PATEII'I OFFICE.
ANNA IIRIKE, or IroWLnn, ILLINOIS,
aMPRovEMENT IN wAsH-BoARDs.'
Speeiea/t'ion forming pari of Letters Patent No. 150,315, dated April 28, 1874; appli( atie-n Sie March 27, 1874.
To all whom it may ccncen: 1
Be it known4 that l', A'INNAFEIKE, 'of FowleI-,Adams county, illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wash-BoardS, of Which the following is a specification, refereuce being had to the accompanying draw i The invention relates t0 an improved Washboard; and eonsists'of a board properly supported, and provided on opposite sides with washing or rubbing surfaces composed Ofcom, rugations of different sizes, the top-0f the board being supplied with a tilting angleplate, so that as either side of the wash-board is used, a broad surface is presentedto support the body of the operator, ad-prevent'the Waterifrom wetting the person. The object of the invention is to provideadouble wash-board, either side of which can be used with equal comfort.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a device embracing the elements of the invention. Fig. 2
is a vertical central section of the same.
A in the accompanying drawings is a board, one side of which is supplied with the corrugated plate B, the other-with the corrugated plate D, the sizes of the corrugations' diierin g asdesired, to the nd that coarse or tine material can be Washed on the same board.
Secured to the board A are the cleats E,the sides of which proj ect properly above the cor- Jrugated surfaces, while their'lower ends form the support for the'board, their upperprl"jecting above the upper edge of the board, and
prov-i ed with bearings to receive the journals a.. on the ends of the lower corne's of the square shaft F, the upper surfaces of whichv are secured to the ngle-plate-H in such manner that when one side of the plate is at right F below the plate shall be substantiallyin the Asaine vertical plane as the adjacent surface of the board A. lThe plate II consists of two .pieces ef material of proper dimensions secured together atright angles, the 'shaft 'F attached y to the re-entrant angle. Thus, be cithersidc of the-board used, it v'isonly necessary to tilt the plate II toward the opposite side, which .affords a broad surface to Lsupport the person, and also protects the clothes' of lthe operator from being dampened or. soiled.
It is'obvious-that the tilting piece 'H can be made with its side pieces at a greater or less ngle than a right angle, and still ei'ect the object of the invention; also, that it caube used with good .results upon any wash-board havin g a double face, whether thecorrugations upon the. faces are of like size or not.
What I claim as my'invcntion, a1ul desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A1. The tilting piece II, the sides of which are placed at or about at a right angle to each other, and mounted upon the rock-shaft F, substantially as shown and described.
2. A tilting piece, in combination with a double-faced wasl'i-board, substantially as de scribed and set forth.
In testimony that I'claini the foregoing iniprovemcnt in wash-boards, as above described, I have hereunto s ct my hand and seal this 23d day oflliarch, 1ST 4. w
n Y ANNA trimm [1.. 5.]
