To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD J. Denis, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Punch Presses, of which the following is a specification This invention relates to metal working machines and particularly pertains to punch presses. It isthe principal object of the present invention to generally improve machines of the character referred to whereby to provide a an eflicient punch press which is equipped with improved operatlng mechanism rendering the machine capable of operating on comparatively heavy material with ease and,

In carrying out thisobject I provide a punch pressframe fitted with a reciproca'ble die carrying ram and supporting an operatingpinion and av gear in mesh therewith, the latter of which is operatively connected to the ram. The'pinion and. gear are eccentrically "mounted and relatively positioned so that the greatest leverage is obtained at the beginning of a punching operation, at which time it is necessary to overcome the maximum resistance offered by the material being operated upon. The ratio between the gear and pinion rapid ly decreases during operation and the amount of movement required of the pinion to complete the: punching operation is minimized.
One form which the invention may assume is exemplified in the following description and illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings in which:

Referring more particularly to the ac companying drawings, 10 indicates a punch pressframe of suitable design and formed with an anvil 11. The face of the anvil is recessed to receive a die block 12 which constitutes a mounting for a die 14. Above the anvil the frame 10 is formed with a ram guide 15 within which a ram 16 is reciprocally mounted. The lower end of the ram is fitted with a punch die 16which is adapted to co-operate with the die let when the ram is reciprocated to form holes in metal or other material interposed therebetween. The upper end of the ram 16 is milled out to accommodate the lower end of link 18 which is pivotally connected to the ram by a pin 19. The upper end of the link extends within a recess 20 formed in a gear segment 21 and is pivotally connected to the latter by a pin 22*.
The gear segment 21 is: mounted for oscillation on a shaft 22 carried by the frame 10 and its teeth are in mesh with the teeth of a segmental pinion 23. This pinion is also mounted for oscillation and is carried by a shaft 24 journaled in the frame. The
' pinion 23 is formed with a socket 25 which is adapted to receive the end of an operating lever 26. The teeth-of the gear segment and the pinion are formed on circles which are eccentric with relation to the pivotal points of the gear and pinion as shown in the drawing I 7 In operation, the lever 26 maybe manu-.
ally actuated to oscillate the gear segment 21 through the medium of the pinion 23. Oscillation of the gear 21 will be translated into reciprocating movement of the ram 16 by the link 18 and causes the dies to cooperate to form a hole in a sheet of material placed therebetween.
In punching holes in metal of any sub-. stantial thickness, the holes are formed immediately the punch die penetrates through the surface of the metal, but a slug remains in the hole and the punch die is forced through the hole to remove the slug.
Therefore, the punch die meets with the most resistance at the beginning of the punchmg stroke. However, the resistance 'to the die is very small after the slug is improvedpunch press has been provided, which is simple in construction and which may be operated with a minimum amount of effort to rapidly form holes in metal.
While I have shown the preferred form of my invention, it is understood that various changes in its construction may be made without departing from the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is i 1. A punch press comprising a frame formed with an anvil, a ram guide carried by the frame above the anvil, a ram reciprocably mounted in the guide to operateagainst the anvil, an eccentrically mounted gear segment carried by the frame, a link pivotally connected to the gear segment and to the ram forming a connection therebetween whereby oscillation of the gear segment will reciprocate the ram, an eccentrically mounted pinion carried by the frame and in mesh with the gear segment, the relative positions of the gear segment and pinion being such that the greatest ratio therebetween will occur at the beginning of i the punching operation. v

A punch press comprising a frame formed with an anvil, a ram guide carried by theframe above the anvil, a ram reclprocably mounted in the guide to operate against the anvil, an eccentrica'llymounted gear segment carried by the frame, a link pivotally connected to the gear segment and to the ram forming a connection therebetween whereby oscillation of the gear segment will reciprocate the ram, an eccentrically mounted pinion carried by the frame and in mesh with the gear segment, the relative positions of the gear segment and pinion being such that the greatest ratio therebetween will occur at the beginning of the punching operation, a socket formed on said pinion, and a lever engaged with the said socket for oscillating the pinion 8. A punch press comprising a frame formed with an anvil, a vertically disposed guide formed on the frame above the anvil, a reciprocable ram mounted in the guide to operate against the anvil, a gear segment pivotally connected to the frame above the guide, said gear segment having a recess formed therein, a link pivotally connected to the upper end of the ram and extending within said recess and pivotally connected to the gear segment, a segmental pinion pivotally connected to the frame and in mesh with the gear segment, the teeth of said segmental pinion and gear segment being formed on the circles eccentric with relation to the pivoted points of said segmental pinion and gear and with such relation to each other that the, greatest ratio therebetween will occur at the beginning of the punching operation, and a lever connected to the pinion for oscillating the same.
