IMPROVEMENT IN SOFA-BED MATTRESSES.

, Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,290, dated April 28, 1874; application filed March 20, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, CHARLES L. CLOSE, PHILLIP C. SCHOENECK, and FREDERICK J. CLOSE, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in SofaBed Mattresses; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a View of the sofa when opened, and illustrates the manner in which it is transformed into a bed. Fig. 2 is. a view of our improved mattress.

Our invention consists of a folding springmattress for bed-lounges, the frame of which is so made that the mattress is free from hard ridges and projections, or partially cushioned portions.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will describe its construction and manner of use.

The cushion k is made on one side of the folding mattress m. The mattress m is a spring-mattress, made on a folding frame, which is hinged at the ends m, and has no projecting piece or side along the joint between the two halves, or at any other point,

except around theedge m, so that it is entirely free from hard ridges or projections. This mattress is as perfectly and evenly cushioned at all parts as the ordinary springmattress. It rests in the sofa-frame it, upon the fiat piece h, and opens, as shown in Fig.

2, into the eXtension-frame'w. The frame a is provided with a head-cushion, n, and side and end pieces a a which extend up around the mattress, as shown.

The mattress m is removable, and can be used separately from the sofa.

What we claim as our invention,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The folding spring-sofa mattress m, upholstered on one of its sides to form the cushion k, constructed upon a frame which extends around its outer edge, and is hinged at the ends m, to form a uniformly soft and elastic bed, substantially as described.
